Author Topic: Quicksilver board inside ATX case (for better drive cooling / mac g4 fileserver)  (Read 6411 times)

i have an extra quicksilver motherboard lying around... thanks to diehard..
i also have this Acard 6885M raid card... which is a 64bit pci card (long)
so it will not work in any pc but provides 533mb/s when inserted into a g4s 64bit pci slot..
i also have 4 x 250gb IDE hard drives sitting here in a 3 x 5.25" drive bay /w cooling fan to keep the drives nice + cool
it occurred to me it would be really cool to somehow have this quicksilver in an ATX case so that i could stack these hard drives inside for having a g4 powered
fileserver. The g4 cases are great + i could fit my drives inside the quicksilver bottom of the case mounting.. but they wouldnt have the cooling that i think they would need running in a RAID stripe + mirror formation (that the 6885m card supports)

i had seen an article on doing this but im searching now and nothing is coming up for me but ATX hackintosh crap with people turning G5's into hackintoshes
or worse turning g4's into hackintoshes.. i cringe at the thought of this because like i told u guys before i had 2 B&W g3s given to me last year and i gutted them
and they both has powermac g3 steath cards installed + I THREW THEM OUT because i didnt know what they were and i thought these g3s were worthless because of the low 300mhz + 350mhz cpu speeds... i regret this every night:) lol especially since i cant find a powermac g3 steath card now.. *sigh*
i cant believe i threw them out..
anyways
i did end up turning one of them into a hackintosh using a microatx gigabyte motherboard.. but that is offtopic;)

im now interested in doing the reverse.. and putting a Quicksilver G4 cpu + motherboard into an ATX case for better cooling + compatibility with my
hard drive array + cooling unit.. i already have the power adapter that i made when the 867 cpu died...  so really im all set i just have to find an article on how
to tap new mounts for the motherboard .. i guess this would be easiest if i found an atx case that has a removeable tray..

if anyone could point me at some articles for reference.. to help me along this task! i cant find them atm!!
i know we have linked them here on the site but my searches are coming up emptyhanded

I've done it with a sawtooth. The worst thing was the rear connectors panel. Mine was really ugly :(
This time was when I've done the ATX adaptor...

...and another motherboard adaptor to PC buttons:  Power, Reset etc...

No at all. It is VERY difficult to put a MDD inside a ATX case.

I've done it with a Sawtooth G4 a few years ago. The computer boot and work as usually. I haven't taken pictures. I wasn't very proud of this work, the G4 looked like a Frankenstein... LOL

The only thing that remain of this work were those two custom adaptors and the rear pane. But with those elements it is easy to redo the job, just a few screw holes are needed...
