one topic we havent looked at i just realized
is Sata cards that, though they may not boot a mac os disk,
still will function for data drives and provide the best
of all transfer connection for mac os 9, ESATA!! 

let the search begin!!

if everyone tries a card and reports back what they find,
lets build a database or at least a list of a few
"well stocked" & "available" sata storage options for
our data!

we know teh manufacturers like to charge more ("sonnet", "seritek")
for the mac bootable feature, so lets discuss
some pci cards that are CHEAAAAAAAAP + will
work for FAST STORAGE!

its about finding a cheap card that just works for non-boot drives.. + esata ports for DATA

Sonnet 2port SATA-PCI Card 32bit (Firmtek Seritek 1s2):
* issues with WD25EZRX (others not tested), under 10.5.8:
- Drive is unresponsive (opening folders takes seconds) on "PC"-SIL3124 no problem
- if you select "Info" in disk utility, disk utility will give you the spinning beach ball forever (esc+alt+appel key say: "disk utility does not react"), closing disk utility hardly and after that shutting the Mac down, the Mac will blend out the menu and you will be left with the desktop background and nothing happens.
- Disk Tool Pro hangs up while trying to gather disk information.
--- EDIT: do not know, what I have done the first time. I tested it again and now, disk utility can access the "info" data. Hm, strange.
Edit2: shutting down also takes longer with the WD25EZRX, also after deep-sleep, if you open the WD and want to see the folders, you will have to wait some 5-10 seconds, wait till the beach ball disappears, do not force-quit Finder.
Edit3: everytime I use Disk Tool Pro with the WD attached and DiskTool Hangs up, and I close it via the menu, the Mac will afterwards not shut down.

All SIL 3112 have 2 ports. The one you showed you can choose any (?) conbination of the 4 port, having only 2 at a time.

BUT with some cables and a switch you can have 4 drives connected and choose which 2 to use...

i have this 1s2 rom . i already posted it here on the forums..
but the problem is that it doesnt fit in the flash chip for most cards
its on another thread im pretty sure i attached it to the thread as a file

the reason the firmware is too big to fit on the bios chip is because it contains  kexts for mac os x
as well as os 9... like i was saying if this firmware could be reduced somehow
and have the mac osx stuff removed then it could be small enough to fit on a chip
and provide mac os 7/8/9 boot without the bloat of size thanks to the mac os x parts

as max said.. this rom firmware also has some failsafes to make sure that it
is running off the real card.. to check the brand of the chip.. so if u put it on a different
type chip then it will not work becausethere  is code to protect itself form being copied
and duplicated easily.. so to do this the firmware would have to be really hacked...
by someone skilled in embedded systems

for data drives.. recording drives.. esata ports etc why?? because the firmtek card is 140$
for the 4 port 64 bit cards.. thats why.. theres other 64bit 4 port cards that are under 50$
that may work for adding drives to g4 systems... with great speed + performance.. just not booting
so lets find them

one thing that perplexed me tho is the fact that the 64bit wide pci cards dont have

To use sonnet 66 cards that can also be bootable seem the cheaper way to upgrade powermacs for more ports.

Maybe there are generic SCSI cards for pc and mac, but with different firmware I guess. Also SCSI is more expensive than sata+ adaptor.
Magma chassis are the ultimate expansion cards for the rest of us. They are still high prized, but soon will come a post about ways to find them cheaper(part by part) on ebay/2nd hand

my bootable card doesnt have external ports (seritek 1s2) and it is only 32bit (limited to 133mb/s)
i want a cheap card to give 2 ports internal, 2 ports external
that can achieve the fastest speed -- Combined Dual sata150 on 64 bit pci card
(to break the 133mb/s barrier as mactron has done)
because the card he used cost 150$ per card
i want to try to find a card capable of this data transfer nonbootable for under
50$ (so i can buy 3 for the same cost of 1 of the other type)

there is a number of people who have made 10$ sil cards into mac bootable ones
i have 2 of these modified cards
max1zz has done this too
the problem is they had to solder a different type of rom chip (brand name) onto the card
and also change a jump to switch from 5v to 3.3v  the voltage going to the rom chip

With cheap sonnet 66 and the green ata-SATA adapter you can have 4 drives...

You will have to dig very deep on macrumors/68kliberation/xlr8yourmac to find cards. The most are SCSI as I told you before. SCSI TO SATA adapter cost $$$ or €€€.

I was just showing alternatives to data storage, just not mentioning the green ata SATA adapters with master/slave selector.

Good luck finding another new and powerful interface with SATA adapters on it. I only have reports of SCSI interfaces. There are no SCSI SSD AFAIK.

I thought as you before, but could not find good alternatives for today. Pci mac storage cards are the more scarce item for us. Even cpu modules are easier to find...I am in the search, like you, but in the other side of the Atlantic ocean. I am wishing to have news.

I am sure back then, if you asked and I answered with the list you quoted or I joined on the topic on other threads, I would have answered your OS 9 question, if you had asked a second time (sometimes just get overlooked in th eheat of discussion).
I could at least have given you an answer on the three cards I possess myself. I even remember once debating with a user and I was saying, that I always have to remind myself to disconect the HDDs on the SATA-PCI cards, when doing dual boot and switching between OS9 and OS X, because the B-header gets corruptive on the drives after booting the Mac into OS 9, when the data-drives on the SATA-card are not disconnected.
Unfortunately I don't remember, but I think that only happend with the non-bootable SIL3124 chip cards (which you can find plenty from several manufacturers as "Windows"-cards and you only need the driver for OS X and 10.5 from the silicon image page) - I know for sure, that this problem is not present with the macally card (since it is OS9-bootable anyway, so why should it coruppt simple data storage drives) and believe the Sonnet is no problem as well, since I think it is OS9 bootable anyway.

Back to the OP's question, all SIL3124 and SIL 3112 cards are non-bootable but working under OS X with the driver from silicon image, but I have never come across an OS9 driver from silicon image's side.
That said my knowledge on SATA-cards that work under OS9 is very limited, so there might exist ones, though.

Shouldn't the usual SIL3112 with the seritek ROM flashed to it, also be bootable under OS9, if Macrumors PowerOC users do use it under OS X as you said?

RE: reverse engineering the Macally SUA-100 card and why no one tried this, I guess since the card itself is not very widely spread in the community and Sonnet/Seritek cards along with ACARD's have been so popular. So the source is limited for the Macsence card. Secondly why would they try reverse engineering the card, when they already had a working solution with the plenty found generic SIL3124 card plus the Seritek ROM flashed to it.

I would lend someone my Macally card, if I wasn't in Europe and all you guys are in the US. Also this card is very valuable to me, so what if it gets broken or lost or someone is unreliable?

i had this idea a while ago, based on my current procedure, where i seomtimes disconnect the SATA drives when not needed. but i think i dont get a 5th and 6th 3,5" drive in a QS 2033 - not to speak of a dual 1,25 ?
