Does anyone have any advice to give as to how to get Max/MSP set up and running for OS 9? I can't seem to make sense of how the authorization process is supposed to work. Do I need to buy a license first? Does the license apply to all versions of C74 Max or just 4? If it's just 4, how much would the license actually cost these days? The Max store only has 6 and 7. Do this mean I have to pay 400 or whatever to get a piece of Software released 12 years ago?

Sorry if i'm missing the obvious. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Max/PD are the main programs I make music in on the computer and it would be great to be able to get this running in OS9.

if you are registered for v4, v5, or v6, just request an additional OS9 license from @support.

to do so, you need to send them the challenge code by mail – it is no longer possible to generate v4 licenses using the little ilok file.

in case you are not registered you might want to read your PM.

Someone made a crack for Max/MSP 4.1 and Jitter as well (not 1.1.1. or 1.1.4 but.. 1.0).  It's hard to consider Max/MSP as an "audio plugin", maybe that's why nobody that has it reacted ;)

Anyways, yeah, you would just install m/m 4.1 and jitter 1.0 from their website and replace after with [k]ed apps.  I have both if needed. :)

I need to activate MaxMsp v4.1 on my G4 Powerbook running OS 9.

Can anyone help me with this?

Jitter 1.0 requirements:

A PowerPC MacOS computer with OS 9.x.
At least 64 MB of RAM.
A G3/300 or higher with an OpenGL hardware-accelerated video card is recommended.
Max/MSP 4.0.9 or higher installed on your system (note that Jitter will work in demo mode with a demo installation of Max/MSP -- you may try both at the same time).
QuickTime 4.0 or later installed on your system.
OpenGL 1.2 or later installed on your system.
At present, Jitter (and Max/MSP) is only available for Macintosh OS 9.x systems -- a port of Max/MSP to OS X and the Windows operating system is in development, and Jitter will be released for these platforms following the OS X and Windows releases of Max/MSP.

I am not sure this Max Msp 4.1 is using ilok.  It has a challenge response dialog.

Ive tried the ilok reset scripts but they cant find HFSExtentTables and didn't restart the Max demo.

i dont know why that is. if you have some real ilok authorisations, that might cause problems.
there is a "registrationnumber" you have to copy from the startscreen first time you use it. then choose "zap authorizations".

not 100%, but i dont think the link geforceg4 posted is relevant.

how is it not relevant.. he was asking how to reset the demo on the Max/MSP 4.1 program.
is it not the same for any + every program demo that uses ilok ?
i simply did a search on the site here for ilok + found that thread written by mactron

I am a long time user of max, I started in 2000 with OS9.
I could write them to get a license in no time, but I'm using SheepShaver to emulate OS9 on a Raspberry and no emulator have SCSI or IDE simulation so the challenge response thing won't work.
so I must ask if somebody still has a 4.1 cracked to help me.

ahoy tobor, if you are registered for 4.x or later (i know you are) then pls send me a PM with your email adress.

though i am afraid that it still wont work with our "solution". maybe you can fake the required HFS+ path for the CP in sheepshaver somehow? it would be your only chance. (SATA/SAS should not be a problem, but no HFS+ could be one)

otherwise, dont forget that there is a free runtime too, which at least would let you run stuff on such "unsupported machines". :)

Do you want me archiving MAX/MSP v4 projects/applications on Forum?
they need being sorted and stuffed on one of my macs first
this would be ideal doing on Summer 2001 G3 Imac
if the "Slot loading cookie monster" would actually eject CDs
without me having to take he case apart
ummm have another OSX Imac somewhere around here buried in BOX
yet we are always fighting "SpaceWar" because of my Gear addiction
give me some time will make somethings happen
Anyone have any clue about mac drivers for Microtech usb scsi db25?

i think i miss some older nato apps and some of the ircam summer workshop and similar things. my collection of max stuff is pretty chaotic (unlike other parts of the collection) but maybe we can swap a list of filenames for now. i dont think we´ll put it on the forums but there are some other users and collectors here. if you only have one small file which i didnt have before it would be worth it. :)

speaking only for myself, not the forum at large, i think it is absolutely ESSENTIAL that this kind of material is archived!  if you can stuff a collection, PLEASE upload it to archive.org or the macintoshgarden - somewhere that it can be found in the future.  thanks!

this would be great too!  i havent been able to find any nato stuff online (was it scrubbed back in the day because of the legal issues with cycling74?).  it appears that many places (like ircam or the west coast schools in the u.s.) no longer host EM software or patches older than a few years, and their sites are littered with broken links etc.

Starting project of archiving packed MAX/MSP disk
some folders and items don't read on MacDrive
so stuffing on Summer 2001 Imac DVD
using external Cd drive(slot is bjorked)
then will transfer for upload using USB stick
most likely in sections relating to folders
thousands of files
my up speed sux so for sake of getting this archived
doing it in smaller sit files instead of 1 disk image
will start uploading for my server
then you can archive them wherever so inclined
most likely some of you will have clue
what some of these files are on this fully packed disk

this would be great too!

sorting through this will take a while, it is spread over hundreds of CDs/CDimages.

next i have to do is an upgrade to the externals collection, then a "mirror" of the OS9 externals for all other major systems (UB or PPC for max4, then for max >=6 mac32, mac64, win32, win64), then my own abstractions, then my collections of photoshop and AE plug-ins.

we are 6 or 7 max users here now and we should share this privately one day. i am willing to sort through yours collections as well and merge it all into one.

eventually it is easier to make a toast image. i am willing to sort later.

best of rebekahs "apps" were in html and pdf format - they are lost forever. i will always remember that moment when my IE browser started drawing shapes outside the browser window. i immediately knew that i will follow this path. :=)

..are you aware of the fact that externals written for OSX wont work in OS9?

there are externals for os9 & osx in that archive?
if so could explain some things
http://cnmat.org/MAX/OS9.html
http://www.maxobjects.com/?request=%s&operateur=&id_plateforme=2&id_format=&start=3555&Submit=OK
2001/2002 most people were still using Classic OS
have been boycotting Mac since they started pushing OSx
purposely killing Mac classic
~shrug~
is anything in that archive worthwhile for you?
https://www.macintoshrepository.org/8077-max-msp-externals-and-abstractions-collection-macos9-v-1-0-
personally making myself relearn classic on 3 machines
purposely aware of how "retrograde" that seems/is
feel like wasting so much time on all of this
my objective for "messing" with MAX/MSP again is
remembering some completely forgotten things/methods
that can be "evolved" & utilized
in making new personal sound design tools
such as camel toe & some of Karlheinz Essl's creations
(saw/heard/met interacted w/him ages ago at some tiny loft called "DeadTech")
http://www.essl.at/software.html
so would have to admit he was inspiration
been into generative composition again recently
should probably email him directly in Deutsch
anyways...
have 3 "Classic" machines somewhat stable again now
some little tweaks that may want attempting
(such as having Cubase recording/editing midi)
my original idea was having Mac "catch" midi & audio from some of my generators/sequencers
and/or synchronize with my main system
not in any desperate bind for gear
want giving the old Mac some well deserved appreciation/energy/respect

better get busy recording
uhmm my 7100 makes for good DrumStation for my sprawling acoustic Kit
so have been using it for recording drums
then bounce recordings from XLR 442

need switching some gears soon so can get more productive

well, everything in that externals folder are binaries for OSX. you must have been using that in OSX but forgot about it. (and btw thee help file folder ends at letter a-i?)

havent found something "new" yet, but regarding apps i must confess that i have no idea which i might have or not. when they were state of the art, i might have ignored those which i rated "useless".

if you are into composition you should get a copy of my old sequencer some day. but for a stable clock and audio DSP at the same time i strongly recommend a G4 processor. for proper GUI feedback a latest generation video card such as GF4 shouldl also be in play.

prefer sequencers "midi only" and/or Control Voltage Gate
have had some problems in the past with host clock glitch errors
took me long time resolving
this place seems having good collection of "objects"
http://www.maxobjects.com/?request=%s&operateur=&id_plateforme=2&id_format=&start=3555&Submit=OK
haven't started digging through his collection as of yet
want actually getting back in create record/edit/mutate/compose mode
do you have link page for your sequencer?

maxobjects is not really supported by developers / patchers, myself included, but it can be helpful to at least find stuff via archive.org. the externals should all be in my collection (a few to come with the next update)

haven't touched any of this in years since 2002ish
MAX/MSP is all blur anymore honestly
fortunate that the machines even powered up
had to hack/solder floppy ribbon cable yesterday for getting that drive working in 7600
looked like a mutant subway rat had taken bite out of that ribbon cable
3 classic machines now "operational"
suppose next step is get them back on appletalk network
probably grab minimac as main Mac file server
thanks for input

Not max related but cycling 74 related. I'd like to know if somebody has a working version of M for macOS (7 to 9). I've searched the web but with a a name as short as M, had little success.

I'd like a working version of Max 3.5. I've got 3.0, but 3.5 adds some interesting things. 4.2 isn't very pleasant on a 80 MHz 601 :)

yup. or, if you have a legit copy, the .5 should be a free upgrade and unofficially still supported.
