Syncing Rebirth 2.0 with Logic 6.4.1 ?
« on: August 23, 2014, 03:16:09 AM »

Hi all,
Does anyone recall if Rebirth is rewire-able with Logic 6.4.1? I have both apps running quite happily, but the Logic help is a little sketchy on the subject-I can't seem to find the "flip menu" they talk mention vaguely(-maybe 'cause it's not there?)

If I remember correctly in Reason 2.5 you could add Rebirth as a rack then you could
Rewire it with any app that supports Rewire.

Rebirth Input machine is what u are talking about i think?
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov05/articles/reasonnotes.htm

some overview for those not familiar:
the setup of rewire only allows 2 apps to be used at one time
this was built as a hack to allow people to use rebirth + Reason together
while rewired to a "rewire host" or "mixer app" for recording purposes (cubase, logic, ableton etc)

its documented in the reason 2.5 manual
http://www.macos9lives.com/downloads/manuals/reason/Reason_2.5_OperationManual.pdf
page 208

this was also included with the first versions of reason
its viewable in the crappy gif of the review of reason 1.0
at the very bottom

the answer is yes.
rebirth supports rewire v1 which means no midi control from the host app is possible
so the only synchronization u have is based on the timeline of your entire song pattern

the good news is that logic 6.x supports "rewire v2" and, while rebirth only supports v1, reason itself, supports "rewire v2".. so the best method would be to actually rewire reason into logic,
and then load rebirth inside of reason using the rebirth input machine rack unit that jakl pointed out (which effectively adds a 3rd rewire app, slaved to the slave(reason) of the host(logic)

can u post more info about where u are seeing this reference to a "Flip Menu"?

im searching
http://www.macos9lives.com/downloads/manuals/logic/Logic6_IntroductionManual_macOs9_feb2003.pdf
and i see no occurrence of the word "rewire" or "propellerhead" anywhere in the entire manual!

there are many tutorials all over the net on this topic
here are a few ive just found

http://sonicbloom.net/en/ableton-live-tutorial-rewire-with-logic/

https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/using-live-rewire/#logic

https://www.ableton.com/en/pages/rewire/logic_pro/

http://www.logicprohq.com/tutorials/setting-up-rewire-devices-in-logic-pro/

the process is the same for reason / live / rebirth (any "rewire slave" or "synth app" was the old terminology for it, basically the 2nd app that u launch that gets attached into the 1st app that u launch)

A side note on using "Rewire"

One cool trick...

If you find some incredible sound or Rack created patch in a Reason 2.5 Demo song or Song done by another artist it will be "Read Only" and you cannot alter the song in anyway.... HOWEVER.... you can still rewire into it !

This (another trick in the wall) was used many times in the Studios I worked for.... An example, I remember a client came who was a keyboardist and he loved the sound of the distorted synth guitar sound he heard in a Reason track done by some guys in Australia, he had a read only demo song of the track, we loaded it in reason in "Play mode" rewired it to cubase, and effectively "Stole" the exact sound without having to re-create the rack....

So, to clarify, any "tone" or "patch" you like in a READ ONLY project can be used, by you, in yours... :)

"can u post more info about where u are seeing this reference to a "Flip Menu"?"

Chris, sorry to be vague- the flip menu reference came from the Logic 6.4.1 help file, under-

Audio Objects and Effects:Environment Audio Objects: Rewire Object

...but- the OS X version...d'oh. I've since found another ref that has a better explanation and a picture..

As I recall the Rebirth input machine was only working in the PC version of Reason...can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for the replies and useful info everyone.     D.

Ok I've managed to answer my own question...
I stumbled across my Reason 1.0 disks, did an install. Rebirth works fine via the Input machine in Reason, when Reason is running in Rewire mode under Logic 6.4.1.. Sweet!

Thanks again for the input guys.   D.

meaning that he loaded up the protected "Read only" "Song file" and was able to play notes + do a performance on his own keyboard, playing the patch that was existing in the other artists "protected song file" and do a record take of this as audio to a rewire host (cubase, logic etc) via rewire  (and possibly record the midi notes as well? depending on if they were using a rewire 2 capable host such as logic 6 or cubase5.1pc to send the midi notes to reason via rewire2....)
