1212 I/O Software Support
1.0

Version 1.0 of the 1212 I/O extension would cause the Mac to freeze on startup if VM was enabled.

To restore the Mac from the VM freeze with version 1.0:

1. Start up with extensions off by holding down the Shift key during the startup process. (Bringing up the Extensions Manager by holding down the Space key will not work, since the 1212 I/O extension loads before Extensions Manager comes up.)
2. Open the Memory control panel, and disable VM.
3. Re-start the computer.
4. Upgrade to the latest version of the 1212 I/O software. The software can be downloaded from the 1212 I/O downloads page, at http://www.korg.com/1212down.html.

1.1(10/16/97) Edit: I was able to source the original Floppy Disk and made A2R, DiskCopy 4.2, MOOF images of it. See attachement.

Compatible Sound Manager Programs

The 1212 I/O's Sound Manager functionality allows you to use the card with a number of Sound Manager-compatible digital audio programs. However, there are wide variations in Sound Manager implementations, and so the 1212 I/O is not necessarily guaranteed to work with all programs which claim Sound Manager compatibility.

The 1212 I/O has been tested and found compatible with the following Sound Manager programs:

BIAS Peak 1.6
Opcode Vision and Studio Vision Pro 3.5
Macromedia Sound Edit 16 version 2
Propellerhead ReBirth RB-338
Adaptec Jam 2.1
Premiere Plug-Ins

Most programs with direct 1212 I/O support, including Cubase VST 3.5, Deck II, and Digital Performer 2.1.1, also support audio I/O via the Sound Manager. With these programs, we recommend using the direct 1212 I/O support, as opposed to using the 1212 I/O through the Sound Manager.

---------------------------------------------------------
Deck II 2.6 notes

When using the 1212 I/O with Deck II (version 2.6 or later), make the following settings on your ADAT-compatible device, in the MacOS, and in Deck.

On the ADAT-compatible multitrack:

Set the multitrack to use internal word clock (see “Setting word clock source on ADATs,” below).

In the MacOS:

Memory Control Panel:
Turn Virtual Memory OFF.
Set the Disk Cache to the smallest possible value: 32k for System 7.5.5 and earlier, and 96k for 7.6.

Chooser:
Turn AppleTalk OFF.

Extensions:
Many extensions are not recommended for use with Deck.
Extensions to avoid include:
Apple Menu Options
Window Shade
RAM Doubler

Views:
Turn off "Calculate Folder Sizes."

Set Deck's memory allocation in the Finder:
Select the Deck application's icon.
Choose “Get Info” from the File menu.
We recommend setting Deck's preferred size (under Memory Requirements) to 16,000k or more. Smaller sizes will work, but fewer tracks will be available.

In Deck:

Options menu Hardware Configuration:
set Sync Mode to ADAT.

File menu Preferences->Memory & Storage:
Set Max Play Tracks to 16 (greater if using SCSI RAID disk array, fewer if using PowerMacintosh 7200 or 7500). Greater numbers of tracks will require larger values for Deck's preferred size, as discussed under "In the MacOS," above.
Set Disk buffer size to 512k.
Set Pre-allocate entire record drive to Always. (With fast drives, this may not be necessary; basically, this just improves the performance of the drive.)

File menu Preferences->General:
Set SMPTE Pre-Roll time to 4 seconds.

Enabling ADAT timecode synchronization in Deck:

Options menu Time Code Source:
Set to SoundLink DRS 1212 I/O.

Options menu Trigger Sync:
Select this, so that it is checked.

Options menu SMPTE Online:
Select this, so that it is checked. You can also toggle this on and off by using the keyboard shortcut command-j.

Cubase VST 3.5 notes

Cubase VST 3.5 or Later Required

Steinberg's Cubase VST 3.5 provides support for the 1212 I/O. Earlier versions, including Cubase VST 3.02, will not work with the 1212 I/O. For upgrade information, please contact your local Steinberg dealer or distributor.

Using Cubase VST with Sound Manager programs

The current version of Cubase VST holds on to the 1212 I/O card as long as the program is running–even if Cubase is switched to the background. This means that, as long as Cubase VST is running with the ASIO Driver set to Korg 1212 IO, you cannot use the 1212 I/O with other digital audio applications.

If you need to run a Sound Manager-compatible digital audio application at the same time as Cubase VST, you can temporarily change the ASIO Driver to the Apple Sound Manager. The Sound Manager allows several programs to be simultaneously active (although generally only one program at a time can actually be playing or recording).

Make sure to switch the ASIO Driver back to Korg 1212 IO when you're done. When the Apple Sound Manager is selected as the ASIO Driver, Cubase VST can play back through the 1212 I/O, but cannot record.

Digital Performer 2.1.1 notes

Configuring Digital Performer 2.1.1

Digital Performer 2.1.1 adds fully integrated, direct support for the 1212 I/O. If the 1212 I/O is selected as the Sound Manager input and output device, this may cause problems during the initial Digital Performer audio hardware configuration process. Before configuring Digital Performer for use with the 1212 I/O, we recommend temporarily de-selecting the 1212 I/O in the Sound control panel, as described below.

To configure Digital Performer for use with the 1212 I/O:

1. Quit Digital Performer, if it is currently running.

2. Open the Sound control panel.

3. Select "Built-In" for both Input and Output.

4. Open Digital Performer.

5. Make sure that the MOTU Audio System is selected as the Audio System (in the Basics menu).

6. In the Basics menu, select MOTU Audio System options->Configure Hardware Driver.

The Configure Hardware Driver dialog will appear.

7. Select "Korg 1212" from the menu at the top of the dialog.

8. Set the other parameters as desired, and then press OK.

9. Quit Digital Performer.

10. Go back to the Sound control panel, and re-select the 1212 I/O for Input and Output.

Premiere Plug-Ins and Digital Performer 2.1.1

Digital Performer supports Premiere Plug-Ins, as well as Performer's own real-time effects. Premiere Plug-Ins use the Sound Manager for audio output monitoring, as discussed in the 1212 I/O manual. However, the current version of Digital Performer holds on to the 1212 I/O card as long as it is the active application–which prevents Premiere Plug-Ins from playing through the card via Sound Manager.

You can work around this by temporarily disabling the MOTU Audio System, as described below.
NOTE: These instructions assume that the 1212 I/O is selected as the Sound Manager input and output device, as described in the 1212 I/O manual.

1. In the Basics menu, select Audio System->MIDI Only.

This temporarily turns off the MOTU Audio system, freeing the 1212 I/O for use with the Sound Manager.

2. Select the audio to be processed, and select a Premiere Plug-In from the Audio->Plug Ins menu.

3. Set up the Plug-In as desired. The effect preview will be heard through the 1212 I/O.

4. Apply the Plug-In.

The Premiere window will close, returning you to Digital Performer.

5. In the Basics menu, select Audio System->MOTU Audio System.

This will re-enable Digital Performer's digital audio system.

Troubleshooting: Audio (Addendum)

This section is provided as a supplement to the Troubleshooting: Audio tips in the 1212 I/O manual.

Recording to DAT

Some users have reported audio problems when recording to a DAT through the 1212 I/O's S/PDIF output. In all cases, this has been due to the user's inadvertent creation of a S/PDIF feedback loop.
In a feedback loop, the S/PDIF output of the 1212 I/O goes into the DAT, the DAT's S/PDIF output goes back into the 1212 I/O, which then goes back into the DAT again, and so on. This could conceivably happen whenever a digital audio device is bi-directionally connected to the 1212 I/O (we'll use the term "bi-directionally connected" below; it means that the device's inputs and outputs are both connected to the 1212 I/O).

Feedback loops cause audio programs in the analog world, as well as the digital; we've all experienced the high-pitched squeals of microphone feedback, for instance. DAT feedback should only be an issue when recording, since most DAT machines ignore their inputs during playback, which prevents a feedback loop from being created.

To prevent feedback, you need to make sure that the digital audio software is not routing an input back to the same output, such as S/PDIF In to S/PDIF Out.

The actual procedure for controlling input-to-output routing will vary depending on the digital audio software being used.

All Software:

Record monitoring (also called Input Monitoring) routes audio from input to output, so make sure that a record-enabled channel's output setting does not create a feedback loop.

Cubase VST:

Cubase allows you to monitor audio directly through the 1212 I/O (without passing through Cubase's effects). This can be convenient, but it also makes it easy to have a feedback loop without knowing about it.

If you are experiencing feedback problems, disable direct monitor routing by doing the following:

1. Go to the Audio System Setup dialog box (select System from the Audio menu).
2. Under the phrase "ASIO Device Control Panel" is a "Launch" button. Press this button to bring up the Korg 1212 I/O Settings Dialog box.
3. Move the Direct Monitor Level slider all the way to the left, which will set the level to zero.

Digital Performer:

Digital Performer allows you to monitor audio directly through the 1212 I/O (without passing through the MAS effects). This can be convenient, but it also makes it easy to have a feedback loop without knowing about it.

If you are experiencing feedback problems, disable direct monitor routing by doing the following:

1. In the Basics menu, select Audio System Options-> Input Monitoring Mode.
2. In the Input Monitoring Mode dialog box, select "Monitor record-enabled tracks through effects."

1212 I/O Utility:

When recording to a bi-directionally connected device, make sure that the 1212 I/O's inputs are not routed back to the corresponding outputs. For a DAT, make sure that the 1212 I/O's S/PDIF input is not routed to the S/PDIF output.

Sound Manager programs:

Make sure that Input Monitoring is disabled when recording to a bi-directionally connected DAT; consult your software's manual for more details.

Also, to avoid feedback in auto-routing mode, make sure that no feedback paths have been created in the 1212 I/O Utility. Simply pressing Mute All will make sure that no routing is active.

---------------------------------------------------------
Compatibility issues

Virtual Memory

Virtual Memory (in the Memory control panel) must be disabled when using the 1212 I/O.

MacOS Real Audio Player requires 44.1kHz sample rate

The MacOS Real Audio Player requires that the sample rate be set to either 22.05kHz or 44.1kHz. When using the Real Audio Player with the 1212 I/O as the Sound Manager output device, set the 1212 I/O's sample rate to 44.1kHz. If the sample rate is set to 48kKz, the RealAudio Player will give an "Error 2: Out Of Memory" message.

ATTO Express PCI SCSI card

One 1212 I/O user reported a playback problem with Deck, the 1212 I/O, and the ATTO Express PCI SCSI card. He solved the problem by lowering the ATTO card's transfer rate to 10MB, using ATTO's "Express Pro-Tools Utility" application.

System 7.5.3 Rev. 2

System 7.5.3 Rev. 2 is known to have problems with third-party hardware and the Sound Manager, especially on 9500-class machines (including the Power Computing PowerTower Pro line). For use with the 1212 I/O, we recommend System 7.6.1 or later.

Shut Down after crashing

If the computer crashes–whether or not the crash happens while you're working in a digital audio program–you'll need to do a complete power cycle before starting up again, as opposed to simply pressing "restart." Turn off power for a moment–just a second will do– to ensure that the 1212 I/O card will be properly re-initialized. Otherwise, the card will be left in an indeterminate state, and will not show up in your digital audio programs, or in the Sound control panel.

Release Notes

MacOS 8.6 approved for use with the 1212 I/O: Previously, we had suspected a problem with MacOS 8.6. This turned out to be a specific issue with Firewire support, which has now been fixed.

Icon does not appear at startup: The startup icon has been removed, to solve an issue in which other icons would appear strangely on some non-Apple monitors. So, please do not be concerned when the icon does not appear; this is now the normal behavior.

BIAS Peak: You may experience audio glitches when recording in BIAS Peak via the 1212 I/O's Sound Manager driver. Korg is investigating this issue.

PACE USB Floppy Enabler: The PACE USB Floppy Enabler is used for the installation of key-disk copy-protection via USB floppy drives.

1212 I/O Version 1.3.1 includes a fix to the 1212 I/O Utility to provide compatibility with the PACE USB Floppy Enabler. Other 1212 I/O-compatible applications (such as drivers for MAS, ASIO, etc.) may also need to be updated, although we are not aware of any problems in particular.

The USB Floppy Enabler is used only during installation of software, and not when the software is actually being used. This allows a fairly simple work-around in the event of problems with any particular application:

1. Temporarily disable the 1212 I/O extension (using the Extensions Manager
control panel)
2. Enable the PACE extension
3. Restart
4. Install the software (restart afterwards if necessary)
5. Disable the PACE extension
6. Re-enable the 1212 I/O extension
7. Restart

Firewire extensions: This version includes a fix to provide compatibility with the Apple Firewire extensions.

Adaptec SCSI Cards and Blue & White G3 systems:  Version 4.x of the Adaptec Power Domain software, which Adaptec recommends for use in Blue & White G3 computers, eliminated the "Set Target Options" command described in the 1212 I/O FAQ. This command was used to set the transfer rate for SCSI drives to 10MB/sec, which is recommended for use with the 1212 I/O. The Power Domain software version 5 includes a similar option,  named "SCSI Mode," which allows you to set the transfer rate for the card as a whole. As of this writing, the current version may be downloaded at the following URL:

ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/pub/BBS/PowerMac/powerdomaincontrol50.hqx

Read Me revision date: 11/4/99

This beta software is provided for evaluation purposes only, and the user installs and uses the beta software at their own risk.

General notes

This version of the 1212 I/O software adds support for the latest single-processor "gigabit ethernet" G4 computers. We have also begun testing with multiprocessor G4 computers, and while our testing is currently incomplete, results so far are generally positive.

This release also supports ASIO 2.0, including ADAT timecode support with Cubase VST versions 4.1 and later.

Included software:

1212 I/O extension version 2.0.2
1212 I/O Utility version 2.0.2b2
1212 I/O HTML FAQ
ASIO Korg 1212 version 5.0b1
This Read Me file

NOTE: Cubase VST 4.1 or later is required for ADAT timecode support via ASIO 2.0.

To use the new 1212 I/O software:

Install the new 1212 I/O ASIO driver

1. Remove the older 1212 I/O ASIO driver from the audio program's ASIO Drivers folder. You might wish to keep this as a backup, in a different folder on your hard drive.
2. Place the new 1212 I/O ASIO driver in that same folder.
3. Repeat as necessary for all ASIO 2.0-compatible software.
NOTE: Not all ASIO-compatible software is compatible with ASIO 2.0. For example, Peak 2.1 requires ASIO 1.0 drivers. Check with the software manufacturer for information on particular software. It is OK to use ASIO 1.0 drivers with one piece of software, and ASIO 2.0 drivers with another.

Install the new 1212 I/O Utility

1. Remove the older 1212 I/O Utility program from its current location. You might wish to keep this as a backup, in a different folder on your hard drive.
2. Place the new 1212 I/O Utility program on your hard drive.

Install the new 1212 I/O extension

1. Remove the older 1212 I/O extension from the Extensions folder, within the System folder. You might wish to keep this as a backup, in a different folder on your hard drive, outside of the System folder.
2. Place the new 1212 I/O extension in the Extensions folder, within the System folder.
5. Remove the file named "Korg1212IO Preferences" from the Preferences folder (in the System folder), and drag it into the trash.
6. Remove the file named "Sound Preferences" from the Preferences folder (in the System folder), and drag it into the trash.
7. Re-start the computer.

If you have been using the 1212 I/O as the Sound Manager device:

8.  After re-starting, open the Sound control panel and re-select the 1212 I/O for Input and Output.

IMPORTANT: In some rare cases, it may be necessary to trash the preferences (steps 5-7 above) twice. If you experience crashes after installing the software, repeat steps 5-7.

Configuring Cubase VST 4.1 for use with ADAT Timecode

1. Select the 1212 I/O ASIO Driver in the Audio System Setup options dialog.
2. Select ADAT as the clock source.
3. Select ASIO 2.0 as the Timecode Base in the Options->Synchronization dialog.
4. Currently, Cubase cannot use sample-accurate timecode when set to use OMS; you should use Cubase's internal MIDI system instead.
5. On the 1212 I/O, make sure that the ADAT's optical output is connected to the 1212 I/O's optical input.
6. Also on the 1212 I/O, make sure that the ADAT's 9 pin sync output is connected to the ADAT Timecode Conditioner, and that the ADAT Timecode Conditioner is connected to the 9-pin input on the 1212 I/O.

After setting up, you're ready to sync!

Syncing Cubase VST 4.1 Playback to ADAT Timecode

1. Start the ADAT.
2. Press the Sync button on the transport.

Cubase will chase to the ADAT.

The card does not read timecode from the ADAT after the Sync button is pressed. So, if you stop, fast forward, or rewind the ADAT, then to sync again you must:

1. Start the ADAT.
2. Toggle the Sync button off and then back on again.

Recording with Cubase VST 4.1 while synced to ADAT Timecode

1. Enable Cubase's punch in/out feature, and set the punch in/out points.
2. Record-enable the desired track(s).
3. Follow the instructions under "Syncing Cubase VST 4.1 Playback to ADAT Timecode," above.

You do not need to press the Record button; Cubase will record automatically according to the punch in/out points.

Release Notes

ASIO 2.0 drivers vs. ASIO 1.0 drivers:
This version includes an ASIO 2.0 driver. Some programs have not yet been updated to support ASIO 2.0, and so they may not work with the included ASIO driver. The latest version of the ASIO 1.0 driver may be found on Steinberg's ftp site, at:

ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/steinberg-software/product_updates/macintosh/asio/

Note that this ASIO 1.0 driver uses an older version of the Korg glue code, and so is not compatible with the PACE Floppy Enabler extension (used for copy protection with some digital audio programs.)

BIAS Peak: Currently, we recommend using the 1212 I/O with BIAS Peak via Sound Manager. BIAS Peak does not yet support ASIO 2.0, so it will not function properly with the included ASIO 2.0 driver.

Icon does not appear at startup: The startup icon has been removed, to solve an issue in which other icons would appear strangely on some non-Apple monitors.

Read Me revision date: 3/29/00

This release is an updater only; it includes new versions of both the 1212 I/O ASIO driver and the 1212 I/O low-level driver, but requires that you have previously installed 1212 I/O software version 1.1.
