I believe it is the number of posts we have made.

It appears that 5 is the max number of squares. After that, they start changing color. Maybe color is still number of posts? Maybe it is something else?

It's hard to tell, as the people who are moderators and administrators also tend to be the ones who post a lot.

These are the defaults built into the forum

Blocks are primary based on Post Count: (and are usually gold)

Post count based groups
New Member (No Posts)................... No Blocks
Member (1+ 10 Posts)..................... 1 Block
Active Member (10+ Posts).............. 2 Blocks
Enthusiast (25+ Posts).................... 2 Blocks
Consistent Contributor (50+ Posts)... 3 Blocks
Silver Member (150+ Posts)............ 4 Blocks
Gold Member (250+ Posts)............. 5 Blocks
Platinum Member (500+ Posts)....... 5 Blocks (Green)

Moderator (5 Blue Blocks)
Admin (5 Red Blocks)

I will change all of this to something meaningful in the future

its part of the simplemachines forum groups; it is relative to post counts yes; and user/member classification grouping; its supposed to graduate + progress as you make more posts;

the weird part... macstuff had 3 before, which was what made me confused as it seemed at first that it was post volume, but he had 3 and I had 4, even though he's got way more posts than me. but now he has 5. so i guess all is well and right in the world and also we have an explanation for what the squares mean. hooray!  ;D
