Apps: 9.0.4 vs 9.2.2
« on: February 14, 2025, 03:11:50 PM »

from your experience are there apps (office, graphics, utilities...whatever) that are more suitable for MacOS 9.0.4 rather than 9.2.2. Just asking cause I have a 9.0.4 volume which I use for Cd-roms that bug with 9.2.2, so I'd like to add a few apps on that disk. Thanks in advance.

I know there's a couple of games that do work on 9.0.4 but won't work with 9.2.2. One example would be the legendary Hellcats Over the Pacific or  Imperialism II. But as you're not much of a gamer from what I understand, I'm not sure if this is interesting for you? :-)

Thanks :)

Indeed I'm not into games bar a few basic board ones (Othello, Mahjong, that sort of things...)

What I'm doing is installing older versions of what I have on the 9.2.2 volume: AppleWorks 5 (instead of 6), Photoshop 5 (instead of 7) etc... not sure I'll use them much but 1) the nostalgia 2) the guilty pleasure of installing things with SNs from the good ole serial box ;)

That's actually quite a nice idea. At times I discovered myself that I much prefer older versions versus later ones, simply because I wouldn't use any of the features added and opted for speed instead.

Of course, ever since running Mac OS 9 on a Mini G4, speed is no reason anymore, but still ... please report your findings should you make an interesting discovery! :-)

You can have 3 volumes for that purpose:

1. Mac OS 9.2.2
2. Mac OS 9.0.4
3. Files

The third one would have BOTH AppleWorks 5 and, in another folder, AppleWorks 6. This way you modularize your systems and apps/files. You also can use any of the programs in EITHER version of Mac OS, which is simpler if you use a partition for that purpose. This becomes more and more true and useful the more versions of Mac OS your machine supports. E.g.:

1. Mac OS 9.2.2
2. Mac OS 9.0.4
3. Mac OS 8.5.1
4. System 7.5.5
5. System 7.1.2
6. Files

Of course, choose whichever approach makes you the most satisfied.
