oldest macs that can run mac os 9?
« on: January 29, 2025, 08:48:26 AM »

in a world where everyone is using emulations,

i am currently doing the opposite: setting up a....
Power Macintosh 8100/110 (1994) in SMM PowerRack (3 slots)

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac/specs/powermac_8100_110.html
-  PDS slot: Sonnet Crescendo/NuBus G3 500 MHz with Fortissimo™ technology (Mac OS 9.1 compatible) (1999)
   https://www.sonnettech.com/publicfiles/pdfs/pdf_datasheets/cnubus_datasheet.pdf
-  Slot 1: Sonnet Sonata™ Pro 24 NuBus Video Card (by Village Tronic™) (Mac OS 9.1 compatible) (1999)
   https://www.sonnettech.com/publicfiles/pdfs/pdf_datasheets/sonata_pro_datasheet.pdf
- Slot 2: AsantéFAST™ 10/100 Adapter for NuBus (1995) (not sure about Mac OS 9 compatibility, the PCI version is)
   http://203.129.23.116/hardware/AsanteFAST/afnubusig.pdf
- Slot 3: Digidesign PowerPC Expansion Chassis Interface (ECI) Card (1994)
   https://archive.digidesign.com/support/propix/ECIPPC.html

Digidesign NuBus Expansion Chassis (12 slots)
https://archive.digidesign.com/support/propix/DigiChassis.html

The following Digi cards are compatible with the Digi Expansion Chassis:

Options:

Pro Tools III Nubus Disk I/O -> hooked up to a BlueSCSI v2 Centronics each & a 888/16 or ADAT Bridge to get aes/ebu or ADAT in and out of the rig at 44.1kHz 24 Bit ;)
Pro Tools III Nubus Bridge I/O
Pro Tools III Nubus DSP Farm
Lexicon NuVerb -> Looking for
System Accelerator (GMR) -> Looking for
SAII/2 (Sound Tools II card) -> probably reserve this for the IIci rig
SA4 (Pro Tools Audio card) -> probably reserve this for the IIfx
Audiomedia II -> plan to add just to run the newly re-discovered ASIO drivers to run Cubase VST v3.02
SampleCell II - NuBus SampleCell II TDM Module (Optional Digidesign Hardware) (above serial #2200) -> will probably go to the Quadra 950 rig
Pro Tools Project Nubus
+Radius Videovision Studio (Third-Party Video Capture Card) only got the card, not the BoB, it's useless w/o it
+Truevision Targa 2000 (Third-Party Video Capture Card)
http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/truevision/Targa2000/Targa2000_Info_1995.pdf

Pictures? No, not for me, thank you. But it will be entertaining to read what you will discover in the process. ;)

3 + 12 - 1 = 14 slots. Isn't that one too many slots? Where does PDS fit in?

I think possible slot numbers are 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E
PDS is usually at E? So that leaves 13 slots.

What are the slot numbers of the 8100?

What are the slot numbers of the Digidesign NuBus Expansion Chassis? Each slot appears to have an ID selector with 0 and F as possibilities but aren't 0 and F illegal IDs for Macs?

Can you fill the slots and see what SlotsDump returns?

the interface eats one
Hence the -1 in my calculation which is for the ECI in the Power Mac.

I don't think there is a corresponding ECI taking up a slot in the expansion chassis, is there?

i got this microtech PCD-47B triple card reader/witer (scsi) (2000) i would like to add to this rig.

https://ardent-tool.com/SCSI/PCD47Manu.pdf

"he card drive to the SCSI port, the standard Macintosh
hard disk interface. Some more recent Macintosh models (ex: G3,
G4) may require the addition of a PCI SCSI board. Microtech recommends Adaptec SCSI boards. Use of the PCD-47 with a Macintosh requires the use of Macintosh mounting software to mount removable media such as PC cards, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, and PCMCIA hard disks. Microtech includes Software Architects DOS Mounter SE
with the Macintosh version of the PCD-47 (part no: PCD-47-MAC). For owners of other versions of the PCD-47, this software can be purchased as an option through Microtech along with the reader, or may be purchased from a separate vendor. The software may also be purchased and downloaded online at: http://www.softarch.com/go/online.html"

this is the original "bluescsi" from way back in The SCSI Memory Card Craze

anyone ever got this working?

To address the topic title, "oldest macs that can run mac os 9?", AFAIK Mac OS 9.1, or higher, is guaranteed for all PPC Macs. As in, they all can install Mac OS 9.1 at minimum and, if not, then a higher version.

In other words, the oldest PPC Macs all can run Mac OS 9. Although breaking past the 9.1 barrier, and entering into 9.2 ~ 9.2.2, might be challenging for some models. There's an app called OS9Helper which assists with precisely this, but IIRC it doesn't work with all affected Mac models.

This is also why I technically grew up with Mac OS 9.1 at highest originally, and didn't experience 9.2.2 until "recent" (10+) years.
