Lexar FW400 CF Card Adapter
« on: June 08, 2024, 12:04:58 AM »

I recently bought a Lexar fw400 cf card adapter.

Have a few questions - my google algorithm was unhelpful...

Can the device be unplugged from the Mac while it is empty without damaging the mac fw bus or the device itself or is it only the cf card that can be removed/hotpugged from the device after ejecting through os9?

I have a quicksilver g4.

Thank you,

Regards,

Someone (thanks pal!) just sent me a Lexar model# RW019 Rev. B / Firewire 400 /
CF card reader and I haven’t tested it with any G4 machines yet. But it seems to
work as you’ve described. CF card ejected / unmounted first, then reader unplugged
/ hotplugged at the card reader itself… seems to have no ill effect on this newer iMac
- connected via a FW 800 to FW 400 cable. I can check it with Quicksilver much later
today if you’d like but I’d say you’ll likely be okay. ;)

Hi aBc, thanks for your reply.

Yes please if and when you have time with your quicksilver.

Yes, how about over twelve hours later?

Lazy man didn’t wanna go downstairs where the bulk of the G4s reside
(@2:30 a.m.). So now, after a mere 12 hour nap, foggy brain remem-
bered the latest QS acquisition was actually still upstairs in the guest
bedroom. (I still had to go downstairs for a FW 400 to FW 400 cable.)

I know, TMI. ;)

Anyway (as previously suspected) no problem with the Lexar card
adapter under the scenario you described. Tested here with a 933
MHz QS and I tried it with the CF card placed inside + also without
the CF card. And of course always with the media "unmounted" first.

Don’t know if yours is the same model number…
but mine includes the lovely warning on the bottom stating:
Do not remove card if LED is blinking.”

Who would've guessed that? ;D ha-ha!

Yes, I had (2), so one had to make it's way to "aBc Industrial Labs" for a new home; definitely a favorite for quick file transfer from machine to machine, just stuff in shirt pocket and walk to next G4 :)

I got one of these on a DieHard recommendation a few years back and it came in VERY handy! Wound up buying a second that I left hooked up to the 'studio' computer at another location... Worked great for file/ track transfers! :D

Never had any problems plugging in and out as long as the card was ejected.

After the studio computer was 'upgraded' to a MacStudio I bought a similar CF device with USB C and still use the CF card for transfers to/from OS9 Mac.
