In response to many searching for a MIDI and/or Audio Interface for their Mac Mini that works in OS 9...

The M-Audio Firewire FW410: (Failure, deemed NOT reliable in Mac OS 9)

I tried every possible setting in the mixer app (output section) and also in Cubase using the outputs available from the ASIO driver, still dead silent on the headphone jacks, even though the meters on the front of the unit were bouncing LEDs of activity.

I then tried a set of optical speakers and hooked them to the Optical out on the FW410.  In Cubase I selected "Digital as the output" and no sound, even though Cubase showed meters movement.

Sound came out of the optical output; in fact, now sound was coming out of the optical output even when different analog outs were picked in Cubase, so there is a serious disconnect of settings in the mixer app and settings in the ASIO driver

I experience some problems with a M-Audio Firewire 410

- The level controller knob has no effect on volume output.
- Output sound is awful: very low, saturated, seems out of phase.

Tascam US-122 (Success Works without issue)

Behringer UCA202 (Success for sound out, DAW testing needed, NO Mac OS9 ASIO driver)

I must say I am almost shocked that no one has responded yet.  Just browsing the site yesterday and came across this.  I feel I should respond.

I have a Quicksilver with OS 9/X.  I have a Behringer UCA202 that miraculously is plug and play no extra drivers for OS9 etc.

Have it hooked up to a mini bose device that is very adequate for my normal sound output that doesn't involve protools.  plug it in and Sound Manager recognizes it no trouble.

M-Audio Transit USB (Success Works without issue, Record only one stereo or 2 mono tracks at a time)

1) Mini G4 can send Mac OS System sound to transit perfectly
2) ASIO drivers work without Isuue in Cubase VST / 5 (and it plays pack 32-bit audio)
3) 2-Track in Stereo in (1/8" jack), Stereo Out (1/8" jack), Optical Out

Hello all,
„ART USBphonoplus“ is another USB device that works in os9 without any additional driver, just like
the m-audio transit. Did some recording today using audiocorder 1.9.8 (aiff 16bit 44kHz) where others failed (bias peak 2.5 did not recognize it, nor did sonic worx ….)
No full featured DAW, though, but it does the trick if you just want to digitize vinyls or any other stereo audio source (yes, the phonoplus accepts line level as well as turntables (moving magnet) and comes with high-quality Burr-Brown ad/da converters that are simply  dead-silent compared to the Behringer uca202, that gave me lots  of hum and noises ……)

…forgot to mention…
when testing uca202  i used ploytec usb asio in bias Peak 2.5 for recording
It worked, too, with noise and hum when no music plays… your mileage may vary

Thanks very much Tom for the info on the ART USB Phono Plus device. Always great to have another possible option with the G4 Mini even if not “full-featured” DAW. AND also if the ART USB Phono+ is a bit expensive (for new units $99.99 / versus used @ $39.95).

And also much thanks for the hum and noise report on the Behringer UCA 202 when digitizing vinyl. Maybe the older UFO202 unit would be better as it does feature a ground lug (especially for recording vinyl?) which neither the UCA222 nor the UCA202 have.

Still, I wonder about the plentiful, inexpensive, used M-Audio FW410 units - used with a G4 Mini [now under OS 9 / https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6942.msg53243#msg53243 late December 2023]. DieHard deemed the FW410 a failure, “unreliable” (above) back in August of 2023 before the OS 9 firmware problem was cracked in December. I’ve since still not had time to test one with a mini.

"just one more thing" (sorry couldn't avoid it)
found another usb recording device working in Mac OS 9 on g4mini (no additional drivers needed)
it's an older minimixer ("McCrypt MX.3BT) formerly distributed by Conrad Electronics SE (germany) from 2013 roughly (see page 4 of user manual attached for operating instructions).
in system profiler it shows up as exactly the same device as ART usbphonoplus (see my former post above), at least i couldn't see any differences.........maybe due to the fact there are the same BURR BROWN chips inside?
 makes me wonder if all devices with that chips will work in OS9 on g4mini?

ordered one, gave it a try - and it works :-)
(this is no vintage device, not  even "new old stock", say it is "new NEW stock")
so here we have an usb interface you can buy NEW today and it lets you record on OS9 g4mini i can confirm

"operating voltage 230 volts" (lol) is misleading as the micromix2 is powered by USB (5 volts) only - there is no other voltage supply - see the pics

....just one thing to be aware of....:
micromix2 has bluetooth 4.2. input that can be used for recording, too, but gives me a permanent high frequency beep in the background.....had to play around with the 3 switches to avoid that beep when recording via line in (instead of bluetooth)...  finally made it, but no fun with bluetooth imho

me now is proud owner of a fa-101
just installed driver from Roland homepage on my os9g4mini, copied asio driver to logic6.....and it simply worked....listened to some stereo tracks i had imported to logic weeks ago.

will test multi channel recording asap, still found no time for that part, sorry

yes, i would rather buy a micromix1 (no bluetooth) than micromix2 now, from my expieriences with that noisy bluetooth crap. Besides that, from my (technical) point of view&understanding there should not be any difference in "os9-compliance"

i'm back with recording results.... i was able to record two tracks of guitar with fa-101 and logic6 :-)
since i'm not very familiar with logic, i can't tell much about performance with more tracks.
Maybe someone more experienced can take a closer look at buffer sizes etcetcetcpp?
