iBook G3 clamshell - no sound!
« on: February 03, 2026, 08:12:26 AM »

Just bought a graphite 466 Mhz from FB Marketplace after looking for this exact model for a long time to complete my vintage Mac collection. The thing is immaculate: runs 9.2.2 like a charm, battery actually holds a charge, no vinegar screen, no missing keys, no missing pieces of the apple logo, no scrapes or scuffs, not a single crack in the plastic....

...but there isn't any sound  :'(

No sound from the mono speaker. No sound from any headphones that I've plugged in. I've tried:
- Checking if there is sound while running OS X (there isn't)
- Resetting PRAM
- Resetting NVRAM in Open Firmware
- Making sure the "Mute" box isn't checked (haha)

Nothing has worked, which makes me fear that the logic board is the problem. But then I found that you can purchase a standalone "sound board" (Apple part no. 922-4764) from some places online:
https://usedmac.com/product/922-4764-ibook-g3-clamshell-sound-board-pre-owned/

But I am not familiar enough with this particular hardware to know if that would actually solve my problem. So my questions for you are:

- Is there any troubleshooting step I should have tried that I missed?
- Is it possible to replace just the sound board for this clamshell and not have to swap the entire logic board? And would this require soldering? (I haven't opened up the iBook to look at the guts yet)

I was likely going to tear this thing down anyway to install an SSD at some point, so I'm not opposed to getting in there, I was just hoping to know what I should expect. Thanks in advance.
