I understand that there is IRC. But I was curious if there are any direct messaging services that still work.

Funny that you ask! I started working on an article for our main page that looks into all the options. But it'll likely take some more time.
If you're looking for something you could use right away, try our admin Knezzen's bitlbee server. Here's an article on it:

In short, it allows me to chat with my Telegram contacts from all my classic Macs, down to my Mac IIci running System 6 (and Wallops). So if you already have an IRC client, it might be worth checking it out.

There's XMPP/Jabber as well, of course. We sure need a good write-up on how and why and what etc.

everything using a centralized server system is gone. not MacOSĀ“ fault. :)

There's some people running an AIM-compatible server that supports the old clients. Haven't tried it. They can probably see all your messages and your password, so keep that in mind.

Just to be more clear. I use this service every day to talk to friends and family over Telegram, Skype and Facebook Messenger from my machines running System 7.6.1 to 9.2.2 (as well as from my modern machines of course)
A great way to bridge old and new. I know that Bolkonskij does this too ;)

I wanted to see if there was something that lets me message people to their phones so this looks perfect. Thanks
