i currently have an external scsi cd-rom which can read .wav files but it's slow. and cd-r's don't last forever. anyone attempt this?

You would need a SCSI to IDE converter and a IDE to CF. I have seen that things on keyboards, but not on samplers.

No sorry can't help here, I only have the same Setup. SCSI CD and external SCSI Harddrive for my AKAI S5000.
I got recently a USB card for it but still didn't try out how to load Programs/Samples from the Mac to the sampler through it.
I would like to hear from you about your favorite Sample CD's for it, maybe you have something worth to share ;)

You might also consider replacing the floppy drive in the s5000 with one of Lotharek's floppy emulators that read memory cards:
