Greetings,

 I having a multitude of issues trying to install OS9 on a G3 900MHz iBook. When I purchased the laptop, it had OS X 10.4.11. I used the original iBook software install disc (OS 9.1, CD version 2.1, 691-3084-A) to wipe the system.

I used disk utility to format the hard drive and now OS 9.1 cannot be installed…

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, you say that it cannot be installed, but what is the system actually doing when you try? What do you see?

I'd try testing the optical drive with another disc. Maybe option-power booting to check for startup volumes.
And I'd make triple-sure that I ticked the "install Mac OS 9 drivers" checkbox in Disk Utility.

Please report your exact issues with the install, also, if the hard drive is original, you are way overdue for a failing one, just because you bought it and it was booting to OS X does NOT mean the hard drive is A-OK

Tried everything.

Mac OS 9.0 (original OS disc), OS 9.1 (original OS disc), OS 9.2.2, and I Tried the original system restore discs again. I made sure and format the hard drive every time and install Mac OS 9 drivers as well.



Error message:

Are there any techs here I can send my machine to? I live in a technological dead zone in NE Ohio and I cant find anyone local for help. I've tried posting on craigslist for repairs and the local computer shops do not work on OS 9.........

Go to open firmware by holding Cmd+Option+O+F when you boot up, have the CD in the computer.

Type these lines in.

(each line is separate so make note of that).

This will make the OS and the installer think you are installing onto a G3 blue and white for that one boot, and should get round that error message.

If that doesn't work try the Universal install ASR disc at the downloads board.

edit, just noticed that you have an iMac CD in that computer, so try a different CD to the one you had in when you took that picture, along with those lines above.

you need the original ibook restore cd set which i believe is 4 cds
(seen in this photo, grey an says "ibook" on the cds)

without copies of this disk set u are screwed

Seems that I have an 800 MHz G3 iBook (that I’ve never examined).
Booting it just now, it has a version of OS 10.4.11 and a version of 9.2.2
(MacTron's version) both installed and bootable. If for some reason
Mactron’s Bootable Rescue CD doesn’t do the trick for you, let me know.

These iBooks originally shipped with OS 9.2.2 so it’s not a complete surprise
that 9.1 or 9.0 won’t load and/or boot (I just tried OS 9 = no-go).
BUT it does boot from MacTron's disc.

Drive Setup on the OS 9 install disc is Version 1.8.1, while MacTron’s disc
has Version 1.9.2. (10.4.11 has Version 10.5.6.)

So, if you want to install both OS 10.4.11 AND OS 9.2.2… download
the Mac Garden disc set. If you only want OS 9.2.2… try the MacTron
“Gold Standard”.

I tried the MacTron discs and they dont work. I purchased an external burner and toast titanium. I followed these directions to burn OS :

This is a way that can be used with different burning applications (they just have to be able to install the necessary wrapper code to make a volume bootable):

*start Disk Copy (usually located in the Utilities-folder), select Image>>>Create new Image... from the menu

* fill in a name for the CD, make sure that a size of 663,000K (CD-ROM 12cm, full) is selected and "Mount Image" is checked (checking the "Zero blocks"-option also is a good idea)

*save the image (usually to the desktop)

*you can now use a Mac OS installer (your original Mac OS install CD, for example) to install a System Folder to that disc image (once installed, you can also update that system using any [download] updater) and add all applications you want (try to install them whenever possible, because simply copying things over will not always work)

*when using Mac OS 9.2.x, remove these files from the System Folder: "Classic", "Classic Support" and "Classic Support UI"

*now run those applications on the disk image which require registration (e.g. a serial number) - otherwise they will ask for registration when booted from the CD and therefore might not work

*disable any AutoUpdate- / LiveUpdate-features, as the applications on the CD can't be updated anyway once they've been burned

*when running applications from the disk image, some applications might create preference files in the System Folder you are currently booted to - in that case, just copy those preference files to the System Folder on the disk image afterwards

*now you should remove anything that may have been stored in "Startup Items" or "Shutdown Items" inside the disk image's System Folder; you might also want to remove some useless control panels, extensions, etc. and set the Energy Saver control panel to "never go to sleep"; also set all other preferences/control panels to your preferred settings (once again, you might need to copy files over from the System Folder you're booted to for these changes to take effect)

*when finished, burn the CD [when using Toast Titanium, set it to "Other", select "Mac Volume", click "Select", choose the disc image from the menu, select "bootable" and click "Record"] - in case you're given the choice, make sure to select "Mac OS Standard (HFS)" volume format, not "Mac OS Extended (HFS+)"

If you can boot into OS X, burn the ISO or Toast file through Disk Utility to a blank CD then boot that.

Got the original restore discs that shipped with the machine. The iBook "will not" recognize the OS9 install discs. I tried booting holding C and I also tried holding in the option key on a different occasion to see if it would recognize the install discs.

The iBook will recognize the O SX 10.2 Os restore discs...
