1) I have used the Built in AFP with NT Server SP4... works pretty well... a few speed issues but good overall (Never ran it over gigabit)

2) I Have used Novell Netware 3/4/5 and they all totally kick ass with AFP and Mac Name space... no issues whatsoever... fastest software RAID ever created with full hard drive elevator seeking and Tagged Command Queuing (TCQ). And you only need a PIII... I have seen a PIII host over 30 Mac Clients and 40 Windows clients on the same server simultaneously.

i think this *REALLY* deserves another look.....
i think most of u didnt really see whats going on here..
file server software that runs on windows.. that communicates with macs via AFP (rather then FTP or SMB etc)

the claim "extremely fast file server for mac clients" definately falls in line with my experiences with using AFP on my own network for file transfers..... which is why i talked so much about using FreeNAS/Nas4free... But if this does the same thing, then it would allow me to use the same box as a fileserver and also as a windows 7 workstation.. because seems to be compatible with windows 7!!!

MacServerIP 9.0
extremely fast file server for Mac clients

Download a fully functional trial version of MacServerIP. Please ensure that you do not unzip the setup file into a path with long file names or spaces and do not unzip it on a Macintosh, otherwise the setup.exe will fail.

for Windows 2003 Standard/Web; NT/2000/XP/Win 2008/Windows 7/Vista x32/x64 Server+Workstation/Professional (build 02.236; <5 MB)

MacServerIP 9.0 Workstation for Intel processors;
inexpensive version for NT Workstation, 2000 and XP Professional /Win 2008/Windows 7/Vista x32/x64 (build 02.236; <5 MB)

MacServerIP 9.0 Cluster for Intel processors;
for Windows 2003 Datacenter/Enterprise; 2000 Datacenter/Advanced;  NT Cluster (build 02.236; <5 MB)

the installer is only 4MB
http://www.cyansoftware.com/download.php?product=MacServerIP9&version=macsrvip9

i just installed very easily..
it creates a folder on your C: drive called C:\MacServerIPVolume

switched over to my quicksilver 933mhz.. opened chooser.. typed in the ip of the windows 7 machine..
prompted me for a user + pass to which i entered my windows 7 username + password
and the share was mounted instantly... it was empty at first.. i copied a file into the directory
went back to my mac.. and saw the file there immediately... without any refresh or anything..

i just tested it with a 1gb file.. and it seemed to be doing.. a little over 10MB per second..
which isnt over the top amazing..  but it seems to work well enough!

remember that the biggest benefit with AFP is the built in proper support for both resource + data forks
allowing u to drag files frm your mac to any afp share.. in ways that you could not over FTP or SMB (the resource forks would become damaged)

too bad i've just realized this is only a 20 day trial and it costs $200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we need to find a free alternative (other than Freenas/Nas4free) that would allow
proper AFP filesharing between modern windows os + our beloved mac os 9!!! (aswell as powerpc mac osx)

hmm the above seems to have been bought by Acronis
not sure if grouplogic became acronis? but i think the product was most likely purchased by the bigger fish

ExtremeZ-IP has been the leader for over 15 years in solving Mac / Windows integration issues. At its core, ExtremeZ-IP is a Windows-based AFP service. It lets Mac connect with their native Apple Filing Protocol to files residing on the ExtremeZ-IP server. Using ExtremeZ-IP's optional Network Reshare features, Macs can use AFP to access files on other Windows servers and NAS devices, through a single ExtremeZ-IP server.

ExtremeZ-IP is the only software that easily resolves Mac-Windows incompatibilities:

Provide Mac users with the benefits of AFP file share access to files on Windows server and NAS devices.
Avoid common Mac SMB problems like file corruption, lost data, application incompatibility, permissions problems, and slow connections.
Full integration with Windows enterprise technologies, including Active Directory, Kerberos / Single Sign-On, and DFS.
Supports key Mac technologies, including Spotlight and Time Machine.
ExtremeZ-IP 9.0 adds full content NAS search indexing.
Runs in parallel with regular SMB for Windows users.
Prevent network performance degradation and expensive downtime.
Reduce help desk calls by up to 40%.
Backed by an expert support team with years of Mac / Windows integration experience.
Runs on Windows Server 2003 through 2012 R2.
Supports Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.9 Mavericks and 10.10 Yosemite.

Free.. Not sure if OS 9 clients are OK… (or just snow Leopard and above) maybe backwards compatible…

thats what the nas4free gets its afp server from..
its basically that combined with an advanced software/os driven RAID powered by ZFS filesystem (or UFS filesystem)
im trying to redo my server because i want to free up the board that its being run on right now because ive realized its one of the best boards i have for overclocking... i used it as my server because it had many sata ports but ive realized thsi was a mistake:S as its one of my best performing boards!!
im trying to figure out a case so that i can stick a ****load of drives into my server.. and have them all air cooled...

i had my eye on this case http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/arc-series/arc-xl
i should have just bought it months ago!! 8 drive trays.. + i was going to stick a 3 x 5.25" bay converter to stick another 4 x 3.5" drives in the top
for a total of 12 drives.. each group of 4 with a 120mm fan blowing air over the drives..+ 1 space for an optical drive (for os installation).. but its gonna look funny with a microatx mounted in that big ass case!

but i dont have the arc xl case.. ive bought the core 1500 micro atx case http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/core-series/core-1500
this case has 2 x drive cages that have 2 trays each.. for a total of only 4 drives
now what im hoping is that i can somehow order the drive cages that hold 4 from http://www.pugetsystems.com/store/?cat=All+Categories&que=%22fractal+design%22 a place that sells the parts for fractal in north america.. if they are the same size then i might be able to put 8 drives into my core 1500.. that would be excellent providing it will fit into the other case the same way .. fingers crossed

i think i might just return the core 1500 + go all out for the arc XL ;D makes alot more sense to have *1* fileserver that holds a crapload of drives then to have 2 boxes suckin juice.. and to run it on a system that is efficient on power.. and power down all the client computers after use (or sleep mode)

just spent all night transplanting my current windoze box into this little fractal core 1500..
its a decent case!!! i actually like it alot i have no idea how they can sell that for only 45$
they must make them for pennies the materials are kind of cheap but all in all it really looks nice
once the systems all together.. !
4 x 500gb sata + 1 x 128gb ssd + gtx 650 gfx ;D

the whole reason i had to do that was to free up the other case i had this box in for backup file server duty
because that case can hold more drives... got to have my archive backed up twice.. and then i can power it off and
feel safe ;D i have issues after losing ALL of my data once back around 2008/2009 it was a real setback :(

but so far im loving the nas4free os... works beautifully to marry mac + pc needs.. and worries about
compatible filesystems (FAT32 vs HFS vs NTFS)

You may have to re-nickname the MDD from '"wind tunnel" to "breaking wind" or something like that!! ;D
