I’m in Mesa, AZ and, being a fan of old machines, but lacking the hardware skills to re-cap motherboards, etc., I will be on occasion in need of someone who knows how to fix these old boys.

Is there anyone in this area so knowledgable and willing? Do you charge and if so, how much? (I know someone who does it for free, but I do not always have access to his skills. I am certainly willing to discuss payment with those who charge for such work.)

Eventually, my Rev A iMac will need a recapping. I have an “ancient” IIcx that has been restored, but will at some point need a looking-at. I also want to acquire more classic machines over time.

I’m not looking for someone today... I just want to have some people to contact when the need arises.

Thank you :D

I have dealt with Thomas Andrews over at Amiga of Rochester on two separate occasions, once for recapping a Macintosh Classic and another for recapping a Performa 575. He's an absolute wizard; the 575 logic board was in rough shape and he was still able to repair it, works like new. Highly recommend. You'd need to tear down your iMac to ship its logic board to him of course, but if that machine matters to you, it'd be worth it.

If you ever need a failed power supply to be recapped, I've worked with Andy over at ACX Electronics on eBay. Another guy who is excellent, he has recapped multiple G4 MDD power supplies for me, all of which work flawlessly now. Also highly recommend.

there is a bit of an investiment at the beginning but recapping alone should be no problem if you dont twist off the rails when decapping
for most work you dont even need a microscope, flux, ipa, soldering iron, mouser and youre set

learn it its relaxing
