Funny, I have the impression a lot of people were fairly critical of the "sound" of these systems in their day. At least I've seen Charlie Clouser of NIN say on Gearspace they did everything they could to avoid using the 888s for anything but monitoring, dumping things to samplers or tape in blocks of 8 via their Apogee ADA 8000 instead. The appeal of ProTools was more the ease of editing and some of the off-the-wall plugins than their sound.
