I was extremely excited to read about the work that was done to port Netsurf to Mac OS 9. I truely belive that is the way to go that will get us back online, and make our live much more easy. The developer needs our full support!

Anyways the first experiance was extremely frustrating and I am lost. Perhaps somebody can help me? First the website is not reachable with Mac OS 9. Even if there is a link at macsurf.org that is stated to work with Mac OS 9, no browser like Classilla, Opera, iCab,  ... could connect to the website. So I had to use an external Linux Computer at another place and transfer the file via USB stick.

Subsequently, after unpacking the program (btw. I love the fact that there is no installer, like in the old days when things were clear and easy), I could open the program MacSurf. But it is never connecting anywhere, just a blank page and the hint at the bottom "BadParameter".
Now hold on, when Classilla is loaded, MacSUrf, starts to display its homepage!
Did anybody else discover such a behavior? Means the need to have Classilla active to make MacSurf connecting to any server, ... ?

The rendering is a disaster. I got the feeling Netsurf at Linux and Atari can do much better. I´ll have closer look the upcoming days and compare a few websites.

Hey Mat!

Great to see you're still around! Wie stehen die Dinge? :-) I shared the same experience with you regarding MacSurf, going through the initial phase of excitement, then to frustration (when trying out v1.0) to a - now - "alright, this is slowly coming along".

And indeed, if you haven't, download the latest version 2.0. I think this received several update bumps during the past week. It already brings a list of improvements to the table and renders more pages, albeit still with quirks. There is a forum thread over at the Mac Garden forum where the programmer talks about it and users post error reports. It helps getting an understanding that this is rapidly progressing at the moment.

I wish the author would have withheld the release until a few more bugs had been ironed out, but I also understand the desire to get feedback and bug reports from actual users.

If he can keep up progress, it might indeed become a good alternative to the venerable but abandoned Classilla.

Regarding MacSurf, well it's good that there is a version 2 now. But it is still frustrating. My webmailers (Squirrelmail and RoundCube) are not rendered to be usable at all, no newspapers, in general very few websites, … not even tried the "monsters" like ebay, amazon etc.
I fell like I felt when I tried Mosaic in Netscape 4.7 times, or Cyberdog in 2005. I hope so much that developement will go on, and that perhaps even some further developers might join and support this project, as the TLS katastrophy is the biggest showstopper for exclusive 'Mac OS 9 usage these days.
