i bought a ppc G4 1 Ghz FW800 aluminium powerbook for a nickel & a dime
& installed some nice rebirth software & ableton live 5.0.2
with the infamous KT Granulator ! ! !plugin which is based on the granulator of audiomulch ! ! !

but i'm eager eager to install a mac os 9 partition just to

a) play with some old SC2 aka SuperCollider 2 software
object oriented programming for DSP
b) play oldschool games (xenon2 ? streets of rage maybe ,dunno old arcade games ^ ^ )
c) explore more exotic sonic software

but i'm having real hard time to install it ...

bought a chinese JM 20330 based msata to ide adapter & msata SSD
but the adapter was flakey & the SSD because of this i guess gave me errors & lots of trouble
not mounting and stuff :-S , I wouldn't advice anyone to go there tbh

so now i have an external FW hdd which i tried to put mac os 9 lives on for unsupported hardware
& luckily i could see in the boothpicker the mac os 9 logo but when i clicked on it, nothing but the grey grey screen :-/

tried universal iso & another 9.2.2 for unsupported hardware but nothing but a grey screen ...

but again that even i could not get to boot or to see in boot picker, nor with letter C + boot

when in open firmware, boot cd:, it gave me a "parsing <CHRP-BOOT> bootinfo is not compatible  " error message ...

Hello and welcome!

I haven't used msata adapters in any of my machines because they've always cause issues for me. The ones I used often result in data reading issues and constant unmounting of drives.

For the slower machines I use IDE/PATA to SD/Micro SD, and for the faster ones I've more recently used adapers like this one, however this has required me to take the 2.5" SSD out of it's case to fit inside the machine due to the difficult positioning of the connectors.

If you're having trouble booting from the MacOS9Lives CD, try doing the following in Open Firmware:

Enter the NVRAM editor by typing:

nvedit

Enter the following lines:

dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0
80010201 encode-int " cpu-version" property
device-end

Exit the NVRAM editor by pressing CTRL + C

Then enter the following lines and try booting from the CD again when it restarts:

nvstore
setenv use-nvramrc? true
reset-all

yeah i returned the cheap adapter & the msata ssd too , i would not advice them to anybody

indeed i saw later in topics over the internet (reddit, ... ) that actually sata to ide was better fit if the controller is better in quality than the cheap chinese jm20330 or something ... very flakey & unreliable,  but OK, i'm first trying with an external fw drive , at least i know that controller works 100% & constantly with mac in regards of booting ... just partitioning , putting os 9 drivers on it, formatting in APM, HFS was a breeze ... 1 minute work, whereas that msata SSD & msata to pata adapter froze & hung & glitched the shit out of it tbh

i read & think it would be most logical to have the partition you want to put mac os 9 on it, should be initialized/formatted & partitioned within already a mac os 9 OS komputer, but helas i don't have that ...

until now, the fartest i could go was ... seeing the little happy mac logo in boot picker, but when i click on it, a 1.44 kilobyte or is it 720 kb : ) disk appears with a question mark ... i understood this was because when i bless from within mac os X Tiger (original OS like in what already was on the G4 Powerbook) the System Folder

with : sudo bless -folder /Volumes/Mac OS 9/System Folder -bootinfo /Volumes/Mac OS 9/System Folder/Mac OS ROM ... (not exactly the syntax but what i remember )

then i get a reply that BootX has been installed/created but not Boot.efi ...
also finder[0] = 263 ( what would be the System Folder)
finder[5]=263
but finder[1]
finder[2]
finder[3]
are all = 0

chat gpt told me thats why i get the question mark, it cannot find the Mac OS ROM ( which is 2Megabyte) but in Finder it says is 3.3Mb ... i have a feeling that Mac OS ROM might be corrupted ? i got that error a few times when i wanted to mount the iso with diskimage in os x Tiger.

Please understand that i try extra-ordinary stuff (meaning outside of what you guys have or are advicing ) because i already tried ( or that's what i think at least, since i read & see there is not really one streamlined standard method ) most of methods which unfortunately did not work out for me or my powerbook G4 PPC .

Aha & yes one of the first things i tried to spoof the powerbook thinking it's compatible power/i book machine ...

my next move might be, buy a cheap PowerMac G4 which has already mac os 9 on it
but even then the question is can my powerbook PPC G4 actually boot it ... i also have to use openfirmware hack probably & since it didn't work the aboveway, why would it work this way ...
because a mac os 9 OS has been working on a powermac G4 ? but thats actually what u guys have been doing here no ... making images of working Mac OS 9 OS's ( PowerMac G4 >< Powerbook G4 ) ...

It is somewhat unusual that you, guys, are having problems with mSATA adapters.
I personally never had any issues with mSATA (DeLock and 'White Box') and M.2 SATA 'White Box' adapters in any of my machines, be it various TiBooks, Al PowerBooks or G4 Mac Minis. All worked like a charm.
I think aBc have similar experience.
Do a forum search and you will find a ton of posts, mine included, about those.

I have only had problems with adapters on computers with a single IDE connector where the HD and CD are combined via MASTER/SLAVE, strange things happen on them, on the rest there is only incompatibility with some brand of HD.

yeah, dunno, i already moved on, sent the stuff back

i noticed something while dl'ing the iso ... i dl on my macbook pro (64-bit os x 10.13.6) because it is
faster & on the powerbook i can't even go on internet ... for example size of iso : 556 Mb

when i transfer to powerbook , the size is the same ... but when i try to open it
as is suggested with stuffit ... or when i try to restore the image to my fw hdd
then i notice the iso shrinks to 529 Mb ? Also i get an error message something is wrong with the iso ...

I guess that's the reason the powerbook fw 800 cannot see the mac OS ROM inside the System Folder ... any ideas how to keep the 556Mb, so that the iso is complete ...

i also just tried to restore the image to fw hdd with this os x 10.13.6 intel macbook pro

its daunting, ppc & intel different shit, so should I dl it with ppc computer,
the only ppc computer i have doesnt DL , naah that cant be it no, allof my ppc stuff i DL through here, this is first time that it doesn't work ...

So, might there be something wrong with iso's on macos9lives in regards to unsuported machines ,  i read somewhere that you chose a new place to upload them ... ?

macOS 13.x should mount HFS images without restrictions, but when it does not work for you using diskimagemounter, did you try toast yet?

i have big anouncement to make !

it was not working through a fw external partition where i wanted to restore/put the .iso boot image ... convinced that the .iso s were corrupt,
but thanks to stewc , i just burned the iso to CD with toast , before i had CHRP boot error with cd in OF,
\\ tbxi cd: or something, did not work, giving the annoying chrp error, but i found a short-cut

multi-boot cd !!! and it booted smoothly for the first time (no disk with question mark) and went way along the mac os 9 boot route ... without manually blessing the system folder & system file(Mac OS ROM) in the system folder ...

the main difference visually is Mac OS ROM system file in the system folder , when i was trying to put the 'Mac OS 9.2.2 for unsupported G4s' boot image on the external FW hdd ( a lacie porsche fw enclosure) was black, no icon/logo, therefore i sought to bless that file & the system folder manually in terminal ... which succeeded partially, sudo bless -folder '/Volumes/Mac OS 9/System Folder' did indeed bless it & created a BootX file in the system folder (sudo bless -info '/Volumes/Mac OS 9/System Folder')... but when restarting , do the OF(OpenFirmware) hacks like described hereunder:

got stuck at at disk with question mark

=> conclusion: if you boot from the ISO you burned on CD, the system folder & Mac OS ROM system file will have its normal logos/icons & will, without needing to bless it manually, just start up the installation of Mac OS 9 : )  ! ! ! !

So yeah after 5 days of sweating & crying & desperately staying up late, red eyes & what not
Mac OS 9 officially, i can announce, works with PPC G4 Aluminium Powerbook 15 inch ! 1Ghz

So tbh the booting of the first iso was the most complex for me
1) finding the right ISO
2) burn to CD
3) OF tricks ending in multi-boot cd

tbh i discovered that nvedit didnt work with me, through terminal,
didnt remember my
dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0 et cetera ...

i suppose because my lithium ion small round battery is dead
have to put a new in, so for me it meant no nvedit ... & no restore, & bootscript et cetera
just
every boot typing ( that's okay, at the end, you know what to type from memory)
 
dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0
80010201 encode-int " cpu-version" property
device-end
multi-boot fw

4) from then on just follow the instructions that automatically pop on yr screen
i.e. a) diskdrive mac os 9 app (by that time you are already in mac os 9 (restore) CD disk)
to partition your mac os 9 drive (it's called initialize in mac os 9 lingo )
b) restore through , i forgot the name of the app, image/software restore or something
the .img that is on the mac os 9 CD ...

F7 to go to the right screen ( 2 options for monitor)
5) very important: erase multiprocessing folder (also in trash recyclebin)

install jasper graphic driver (from darth vader)
erase or move all ati & nvidia acceleration & other graphical drivers
to the extensions-off or other map

If you don't do this , it can freeze
if it freezes, just press apple + shift + ESC to put acceleration OFF

i actually followed this, except for the multi-boot fw line after device-end

So yeah, now it boots from an exernal fw hdd partition, that probably i can just put in the internal atapi
or pata connector inside the powerbook ... next step will be probably finding a ssd sata to ide adapter
