Author Topic: How can I move the on screen mouse cursor with my keyboard in Macos 9?  (Read 1851 times)

Thought I would ask here.

http://files.macos9lives.com/MacOS%20Operating%20Systems/Mac%20OS%209.2.2%20For%20Previously%20Unsupported%20G4s/Mac%20OS%20922%20Unsupported%20G4.iso

Installed the "Unsupported G4's" .iso and flashed it to usb, stuck it in the mac and booted from it, it booted fine but then the mouse stopped working.
I unplugged it and replugged it and it worked for very little time maybe a second then stopped.
I must note that the mouse does not entirely stop working as left and right click still work, it is only that the mouse cursor will not move around the screen when I move my mouse, only will it work when I plug it out and then in but it stops moving after a second.

How do I fix?

Thank you.

Maybe just a little bit more info from you?

1). Which specific “Unsupported” Mac are you trying this with?

2). And you’ve not installed the software on that Mac, but instead are trying to boot from a USB stick?

3). Are you using an Apple mouse with a good condition connection cable, or some other mouse?

4). Have you tried burning the .iso to CD and then installing to machine in normal fashion?

1). Mac G4 MDD (has silver heat sinks inside, not sure how to tell between firewire types)

2). It has Macosx 10.5.8 installed on it so I flashed the mac 9 Iso to usb and booted from it.
(like how you would boot most things you where going to install)

3). I tried two mice, a two dollar one and an expensive gaming one.

4). Yes but the Cd could not boot, the usb does boot.

the machines clock defaults to strange values too, it resets to 1PM 1970 each time it turns on, I tried to set it back in macos10 but it resets back even when I set to correct time.
Not sure if this has anything to do with mouse issue though.

Is the battery fresh-ish? (r.e. the clock weirdness)

I’d boot it from a freshly burned CD / DVD to install.

If both mice work well under Leopard, then likely they’re okay. (Maybe.)

If it turns out to be a FW800 MDD, then read installation instructions.
(Those are around here somewhere.) And see attached pic for FW800 clue.

I checked battery with a multi meter it read as 3.51V when I checked it a few seconds ago.

So on windows what software should I use to burn the .ISO file?

Also my mac does not have that thing you circled in that picture on the back of it.
(between firewire and lan ports).

I reset the international clock in leopard and it reads as 2025 after restarting but it still get the message saying "clock set before 2001 may cause issues"

Well (to me) the absence of that FW800 port is good news, Ya got a FW400… and if it is truly an MDD. Now what does the white label say on the back (next to the ports) as far as GHz or MHz? (Not really all that important at this point.) But because it isn’t a FW800, your choices for OS 9 installation software just expanded. No need for the “Unsupported” now.

However… if the machine only has one HD inside, you may need to reformat and dual partition that HD in order to have one installation of 10.5.8 on one partition and OS 9 on the other partition. Which could mean that you’ll need to backup your 10.5.8 IF there’s something on there that you’d like to retain - because OS 9 is going to require a reformat of the HD and at least two-partitioning of the HD in order to install OS 9. Now if you have two drives, just dedicate one for OS 9 and you can possibly leave your 10.5.8 intact.

AND here’s one approach using Windows to burn an OS 9 CD. (There are others, but this one does come to mind first.) https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6699.0

BUT, Mardeec does note: All but one of the Macs that did not boot from the TransMac CD did boot from a CD burned in a G4 Mac running OS9.2.2 and using Toast 5.2.1.  The exception was the Power Mac G4 1.25 (MDD 2003), which showed a -18 system error in both instances.  There may be bigger problems as it no longer boots into OS 9.2.2 from the hard drive.

I believe that Mardeec previously has had other underlying problems with that particular 2003 MDD.

So I burned this to usb

http://files.macos9lives.com/MacOS%20Operating%20Systems/Mac%20OS%209.2.2%20General%20Image%20%28OS%20X%20DMG%20Format%29/OS9General.dmg

And it booted and now it works!
So the registration screen came up and I put it in and it booted to MACOS9.2.2.

Though, I want to install this to my harddrive (I already backed up my adobe software from my leopard install).

If I whack a second drive in, should I burn the image to that harddrive?

I don't mind overwriting the main drive since I can install macos9 photoshop and stuff.
Should I plug the drive into my windows pc and then use transmac to write the Macos9 dmg file to this hardrive and then put it back into my mac or is there an easier way to do this?

I don't really know as I have never done that AND I have been away from Windows for a very very long time now.

I like the two HD approach mo bettah myself. But try as you like and let us know what works best for you. ;)

I think that I am being a bit dumb here, I just need a tool that lets me burn the macos9 DMG to the harddrive from a usb.
I'm used to just sticking in a usb and clicking install to hard drive  ;D lol.

If the image you're using is anything like "Ross_s Mac mini OS 9 CD v9" then there should be a software restore application built-in that can install to the hard drive for you.

Regarding the mouse issue, under the hacked Mac OS 9 you will find much better compatibility using an official Apple mouse like the Apple Pro Mouse which you can get on eBay for < $10. It sounds like you got a mouse working though.

Regarding the time issue that is almost definitely a battery issue. Even if the battery is showing a decent voltage consider how old it is. You don't want it leaking anyway. If you didn't change it yourself, you should probably change it. Especially if it looks original. You can find those batteries for <$5.
