I've been looking for a solution to stream video files stored on another PC over to my OS9 Mac. From the research I've done thus far, it seems that the best way to do this is to transcode and stream the video file from VLC Media Player over RTSP to a Darwin Streaming Server (running on the same host as VLC) and connect to the DSS stream from the OS9 Quicktime.

As far as I can see, nobody has tried with this specific setup and reported their findings online. I successfully got the DSS running and accessed the configuration page, but beyond that I'm hung up on how to properly do this, and none of my attempts have amounted to anything!

If anyone here knows how to properly set up the VLC stream and the Darwin Server so that I can open it from OS9 Quicktime (or perhaps if there's another way to achieve the goal of streaming video files over network to an OS9 media player), please let me know! As a novice with computer networking this is definitely out of my wheelhouse, but I hope I can get it working.

i think icecast existed for PPC and could stream formats OS9 understands.

Since I last posted, I've figured out a lot of things, and now I seem to have one last problem that I can't overcome. Whenever I try to RTSP connect to a video/SDP file stored on the DSS from QT6, I get a message that persists over the QT playhead. Either:

configuring

Or:

requested data

And after two minutes, I get a timeout error.

So far I've tried:
• Streaming the provided sample video files on the DSS.
• Streaming a VLC RTP stored in an SDP file, using a roundtable of different transcode and sout settings (including modifying the SDP in a text editor).
• Streaming from a media playlist created on the DSS.
• Using ffmpeg to reencode the video files into any number of formats that natively play on QT6 (mpeg1, xvid, etc.).

I then did a few things with the reencoded files. The first thing I tried was exporting them from QT directly to a hinted mov file. I then tried exporting them as ISMA compliant (low bitrate, reduced resolution, etc.) hinted mpeg4 files. Each time, I sent these files from the Mac to the media folder of the PC running the DSS, and then RTSP connected to the files from QT.

None of these attempts have worked. From my observations of the Connected Users tab on the DSS, the OS9 Mac is receiving bytes and bitrate. On QT, I've also observed that the length of each video was successfully posted to the playhead. But all the same, it's stuck on requested data and times out after two minutes. The DSS and QT are both running version 6.0.3 and are both wired to the same LAN. Do I need to downgrade the DSS to 5.5.5 or lower? Is streaming broken on this version of QT? Could something in my network be causing an issue?

The only thing that HAS worked is connecting to a DSS file from VLC.

Not sure what to do from here... I want my next post to be the one where I can say that I finally got this working.
