Acrobat Writer 5
« on: February 03, 2025, 09:46:52 AM »

Hello,
in order to make pdf-s with self-produced fonts dating back to 25 years ago, I would need Acrobat writer 5 compatible with Mac 9.2.

Those fonts are necessary for a book I have to write but the files will not be compatible with the publisher's new computers, so I need to give him pdfs.

Any ideas on how to get Acrobat writer 5?

Thank you, Daniele

Yes, the link MigMac posted is the latest Acrobat 5 for Mac OS 9.

Even if you did not ask for It, I would recommend "Jaws PDF Creator" for producing good printable PDFs. Acrobat Distiller can be a little picky, buggy and sometimes complicated. While JAWs works from every application as printer and produces good PDFs, especially if you like to include your TTF or PS fonts (what "PrintToPDF" for example cannot do).

In general every Mac OS 9 computer should have JAWs installed to be able to print PDFs from every program in existance.

Hello again, together with my co-author, we were not able to use the solutions you proposed. He says we should try getting Adobe Writer 5, updated for Mac 9, directly from someone who uses it.
Can you help? If necessary, he would agree to pay for the programme [not sure what its price now would be, but you certainly remember how much you paid back then].
Thank you, D

Hmm, ... :-/ What solution? Acrobat? And what was the problem? Usually everything works easily

I do not understand. Acrobat does not need a special update to work with Mac OS 9

I bought my official copy of Acrobat 5 a few years ago at ebay for 39,- bucks. But it will only lead to the same files as at macintoshgarden, …

The page referred to above for Jaws includes a reference to Acrobat 4 and says it includes the ability to create PDFs.
Five is better, of course. In some ways.
I wonder if four would give you what you're looking for?

You ar mixing up several things.

Jaws PDF Creator is a standalone program that needs nothing than the Mac OS to create PDFs via Mac OS' internal printing system. You just have to install JAWs and you will be able to produce high quality PDFs from within every user program that can print!

The reference is only that JAWs is "similar fashion to Acrobat", so no, you do not need Acrobat to use JAWs. These are simply 2 different programs. And even in then next line is written, that JAWS can be used "as alternative to Adobe's Distiller versions 3 to 5", …

Quote from: JAWs PDF Creator Manual
The application is embedded into the printing system of your computer’s
Operating System so that it appears as a PostScript compatible printer to
applications running on that computer. You can produce a PDF file from
any document by printing the document to the Jaws PDF Creator printer in
the same way that you would produce hard-copy by printing to a real
printer.
