nvidia drivers + xfx9200 + cube + os 9.1 = boot stalled
« on: February 02, 2025, 01:30:25 AM »

All,

I recently flashed a pc xfx 9200 (nvidia) to mac bios. That was the second similar card I have flashed and that works well in 9.1. Or did work with original drivers. I found here in downloads a nvidia driver pack nVidia3.5.2Drivers.sit, extracted that onto disc and copied all files onto system folder.

Now the system does not boot any more past "starting", and progress bar is at about 10 %.

I have tried to boot with extensions off, but that has no other effect but "booting with extensions off" before the progress bar appears onto screen.

Is there any other ways to boot into a safe mode so to skip all drivers, or is installing new version the only possibility? And then maybe remove the drivers all together.

Edit: I booted with the original ATI adapter installed and that got the os to boot properly.

Replacing the adapter is bit of hassle, as I did tape over the pins in the XFX (so not to need cut the traces) and you need to replace the tape each time adapter is removved from the slot.
So the questions still remain:
* does the downloaded driver *NOT* support 6200?
* is there a way to real safe mode boot?

Extensions Off is so-called "Safe Mode",  and the drivers are in the form of Extensions (and Control Panels AKA INITs, which are also turned off when you boot that way, as they are essentially Extensions, but with a panel to control/configure them, hence the name).

Hopefully reinstalling things can fix things for you, but I would not expect that to be the case if you already tried booting with extensions off.

Perhaps it was a bad flash, and you need to reflash? What was the pendantic, exact step-by-step flashing procedure?

Or, perhaps the flash is OK, and you just need appropriate drivers loaded? Where is your Mac OS 9 install sourced from? Some Macintosh Garden page? The "Universal" Mac OS 9 image we have here? Somewhere else?

Flash was successful, checksums matched. And it worked several days/boots until ”new” drivers. So, although anything is possible, I quite trust on the card.

I bought this cube a few months ago and now was time to fiddle with it. Install of the os was original on the disk. Cube was in original packaging with everything that came with it.  I also got the original monitor in original packaging also. So I guess it was installed from original cd’s, but I cant be sure of that.

Like said I got the drivers from macos9lives server. I have no idea whether theyre compatible with 6200 or not. I guess they’re not.

Yes, I inquired about the OS install as a whole, not the drivers. It's good to know for reproduction steps and troubleshooting. So basically it is whatever that the previous owner used, presumably the original CDs, with modifications unknown, if I understood that right.

If you trust the card, then all I can recommend is patient trial-and-error with all driver versions you can find, starting from most recent. You can also try reinstalling the OS using the "Universal" image we have, and see how that goes (they come with both NVidia and ATI drivers pre-installed).

If anyone has any other ideas, that would be great, but this is all I can think of.

Those same drivers I have found in two places, here and macintoshrepository. I’ll continue the search.

Thanks for your input👍
