Hello,

I have an Early 2003 iBook G3. I installed Mac OS 9 after upgrading the storage with one of those adapters that allows one to put a modern SSD into the 44-pin IDE port. After that i installed and played a few games, but then i wondered what would happen if also installed OpenBSD and OS X?

The answer is: my Mac OS 9 partition won't boot anymore, either by selecting the startup disk in OS X or from OpenFirmware.

Is there a way to repair that installation without having to start from the beginning?

There is another question i have, which might be considered off-topic, cause it's about a PowerBook 190, which is not compatible with Mac OS 9. Anyway, are those old M68k PowerBooks capable of multi-booting like their successors?

I would ask on 68kMLA, but i think they're having problems with their confirmation e-mail system.

Well...having OpenBSD in the mix probably complicates things!  (But may or may not the root problem).  I didn't know there was a good PPC port.  I may ask you about it in a separate post!

If you didn't have OpenBSD, it sounds like it could just be the MacOS 9 System Folder, not being "blessed"...but since it's there, it could be OpenFirmware getting confused.  I don't know how OpenBSD boots, but Linux usually has an extra boot partition (on my ibook).

Could you describe your partitions?
What exactly are you seeing when you hold the option key down?
Or in the Startup Disk in System Preferences in MacOS X?

Feel free to ask about the PowerBook 190 here, or, if you'd rather, hop over to system7today.com and join up there.  I don't have that model, but have some experience with Linux and NetBSD on M68k powerbooks. 

You can definitely have multiple OS's, but there is no "boot selector" in the firmware.  They all are able to only boot Apple's OS directly, and use an Extension or Control Panel to switch over to an anything else.
