Virtual PC Disks
« on: December 04, 2024, 02:40:35 AM »

Currently trying, experimenting with Virtual PC, version 4 actually, VPC5 works but is rather sluggish on my Pismo G3.

Are there sources to get disks other than Win98 and Win2000: Me? XP (if that works with VPC4)? Linux distribs (Red Hat?)...

thx in advance

I remember there's also a pre-installed MS-DOS image somewhere floating on the Mac Garden. I downloaded it ages ago.

I think there was some community effort to release an updated DOS some time ago, though not being a DOS guy, I know nothing about it really. But if this is interesting, you might want to try to install it on VPC. Sounds like a fun adventure. Not sure about the name but some of our members may be able to shed more light on this.

Also, shouldn't VPC be able to run some ancient OS/2 version? Might be interesting to play around with that one as well

I've just installed VPC5 on the internal drive, runs better and a bit faster than on an external FW drive. I'll continue exploring.

not related but LinuxPPC (and LinuxPPC Q4) proved to be impossible to install on a FW volume, I burned CDs properly but when the install process started the "booting..." message floated endlessly.
As I'm a stubborn guy I'll go with YellowDog as it seems the custom installation is working. Not sure I'll do much/use it but it's nostalgia for I had YD on my blue iMac ...looong time ago.

@MigMac I'd suggest to check the Garden for those and a lot other VPC stuff. Lots of treasure there, and all VPC versions' pages are interlinked, and thus everything is easy to find from there.
