Old MacOS is the best for kids
« on: November 25, 2024, 02:38:58 AM »

Hello everyone. I am a father and my 5 year old kid is about to upgrade from a Macintosh Classic to an iMac G4. But I don't want to use OS X, and that's why we're here. :)

Welcome bebopbeluga!

We have three kids and they all grow up and "learn computing" on Mac OS, where they can have all their (educational and non-educational) games or paint with KidPix. Lately, our oldest has been starting to use Hypercard for making games for her siblings to play. Simple adventure games with buttons that jump from one page to another ...

It's a safe computing environment with plenty of activities readily available. Lately the kids found out how to change the background, so every time I go there I find a new pattern / background :-)

I'm eager to hear from you on what software you use, what works for you and what not and other creative ways for kids to play with the Mac other than "just" games (though nothing wrong with that too)

There are so many OS9 title for kids of that age... "Pajama SAM" Reader rabbit, spelling rabbit, math rabbit" etc; there should be literally dozens of OS9 titles that will run on "Virtual CD Images" like shrink wrap or you can mount toast images... should be tons on the garden or Knez hotline sever

That's how I got here too. I grew up on the Mac in the '90s and I researched what's the fastest Mac I can get to run Mac OS 9 for my (then) 3-year old to play some educational games I had played with none of the junk or Internet stuff from today. I stumbled on the folks here who had hacked Mac OS 9 for the Mac mini G4 and bought three broken down ones on eBay to restore hoping I would get one good one out of it. Now my 3-year old is 4.5 and he is learning hand-to-eye coordination and some simple problem solving skills on his Mac mini G4.
