PCI Local Bus Timeline: Digital Audio Cards
« on: November 12, 2024, 12:12:36 PM »

1995     PCI 2.1             266 MB/s                   improvements with Power management: Power Macintosh 7500 (August, 1995)
1998     PCI 2.2             —                              + Hot-plug support: Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio)
1999     PCI 2.3             —                              - legacy +5V support: Power Mac G4 (MDD)
2002     PCI-X 1.0         Up to 1.06 GB/s         Server-focused, 133 MHz: Power Mac G5 (early models)

Until June 1995, Apple had stuck with the 10 MHz 32-bit NuBus slot as the standard Mac expansion slot, something it had adopted in 1987 with the introduction of the Mac II. But June saw the first Mac with PCI slots, a 33 MHz 32-bit architecture pioneered on the Wintel side.

About the Lynx AES-16, they were produced up to 2016 Rev D1G (or longer).
We need Firmware revision A for OS 9 support. 16 channels of 24/192 on mac os 9.

About the Lynx AES-16, they were produced up to 2011 Rev-B1 if not longer (edit: 2016 Rev D1G found). Thing is
We need Firmware revision A for OS 9 support. 16 channels of 24/192 on mac os 9. this card makes
It happen. None other. Can the firmware be taken from a rev a somehow? Any insight?

Thanks smilesdavis! The last AES16 firmware update (M22) does indeed actually work for the Rev B cards. However, errors are thrown during the install. But it does work.

***To get it to work on OS9, you need to install the firmware on OSX with "L2UpdateX21a.sit"***

It's important to reiterate that the ASIO driver is not system-wide on OS9; it's application specific. Here are the supported applications:

Logic 5.5
Cubase VST/24 Version 4.1r2
Cubase VST/32 Version 5.0
Nuendo 1.6.1 Logic 5.5.0
Peak VST 2.58
Peak 3.2 Digital Performer 3.11
Mac the Scope
Reason 2.0

I just wanted to share this info as I couldn't figure out why the driver wouldn't appear in Logic 4 or 5.0. Hope this clears up some potential headaches! :)

I wonder why a driver is locked to specific applications

found the answer: resolution

- Logic 5.5.0 -> 192 tracks of audio playback at up to 24Bit/96kHz rates, in a variety of audio formats.
- Cubase VST/24 Version 4.1r2 -> "Cubase VST24 adds support for 24 bit/96 kHz operation"
- Cubase VST/32 Version 5.0 ->  "16 / 24 bit - 44.1 to 48 kHz (VST/32 32 bit files & 96 kHz)"
- Nuendo 1.6.1 -> "Nuendo 1.60 added features:  Full 192 kHz support"
- Peak VST 2.58 -> ?
- Peak 3.2 -> ?
- Digital Performer 3.11 -> ?
- Mac the Scope -> ?
- Reason 2.0 -> ?
