I know several users run vintage macs with the two systems, MacOS9 and MacOSX, on the same partition/volume.

What about multiple OS9 folders/systems then, on the same disk/volume? In my experience (long time ago) for MacOS9 it was one volume = one system folder, yet I stumbled upon this and it intrigued me:

I believe the capability came along with Mac OS 9.1, when the Startup Disk control panel began showing not only the name of volumes but also the valid System Folders on the volumes (including Mac OS X). So you could pick a particular System Folder on a volume, instead of just picking the volume

one volume, one folder - otherwise you can not choose in the chooser. (with controlpanel you could.)

The issue with Mac OS 9 is the items that are outside the system folder - the Applications folder, etc.
