Opcode Studio 5LX Offline Use
« on: October 31, 2024, 06:39:06 AM »

As I take breaks and come back to using my midi gear, I find that the patches in my Studio 5LX disappear. I thought that the patches could be edited and loaded into the unit via the Studio Patches software, then you could flip through the settings offline when you need to. Mine says 0 on the front panel, with all the patches gone. This isn't a battery issue either. Anyone else get this?

When you say "This isn't a battery issue" I take it that's because you have verified you have the correct BR2325 3-Volt lithium cell in there + side up and have checked the voltage with a meter AND have cleaned the contacts.
I just went thru all of that because it's the reason for dropped memory 99.9% of the time.

The other .1% is poor contact with the socketed RAM chips directly in front of that battery. I mean the longer ones. You can VERY carefully pry them loose, reinsert them and test. Try it on the other two in the "odd" and "even" sockets if the first two don't help. In fact, you can even just loosen them halfway and push then back down once or twice. I say that last sentence because I have a 5lx I bought on fleabay that I installed and used for awhile with no issues until I tried to set some patches and got the result you're getting. When I opened it up, I found that the seller had pulled and reinserted the RAM at some point and had managed to shift one of them over one pin so that two pins were hanging over the edge on one end and two sockets were empty on the other. So, if you DO that, be extremely careful. It's really easy to miss or bend a pin etc.

Finally, just think: Logically, ;D…  if you can set Studio Patches and they work unless/until you power off, you're saying that the circuitry is functional and the memory is dropping out only for lack of backup voltage. The next step is going to be to disassemble the entire unit to check the battery connections on the two-sided, thru-hole PCB and possibly perform micro-surgery. Personally, I'd buy another LX first…

Yeah, the battery was replaced not long ago. Old one had a puny charge left in it. I think I might have just cracked the issue but I'm uncertain. The unit is still holding its patches after resetting them in the Studio Patches software. I think what's happening is that when the rare time comes that I boot up my Mac, somehow the unit gets reset due to not being able to properly connect, or software crashes, or something like that. Then I forget about it, and the next time I turn on my 5LX, it's lost its settings. It isn't always like that though. So now I'm gonna monitor this closely from now on, and make it a habit to check if the unit has been reset or is still holding its patches when I turn my Mac off.

i think the problem was caused by a hardware error or too much midi data that for some reason blocked the machine. even changing the battery sometimes does not solve it because if changed quickly or with the machine still connected to the power it can still retain some corrupted data and the new battery does nothing but maintain it. My method: remove the battery, leave the studio 5 disconnected from the power for a day. the next day insert a new battery. reinstall OMS and redo the setup and patches (the number on the front indicates the patch, if the number is "0" it has nothing in memory) this is because something in the software can be corrupted. This should restore the Studio 5, if it still does not work there is a more serious error.

I'm pretty sure my particular issue was OMS crashing or the S5LX not being able to connect, etc. It's working fine now. I'll just remember to check it before I shut down my Macs from now on.

Now I wish there were a way to easily restore patched on it without having to connect it to a computer. It'd be nice if it took SysEx data to restore all patches.

You mean store the patches in MIDI SysEx format and load them by say… MIDI in the front panel?
So, where then do you get that SysEx from? That dark thing you see in front of you now is a very deep rabbit hole.

That's not supposed to be a problem anyway.… as long as you have a good battery…
