New in 2024, Motorola DSP56300 Emulation a reality with several free plugins
(1/1)
DieHard:
OK Musicians... this is an amazing accomplishment for us...
As you may, or may no know, many incredible hardware synths utilize the Motorola DSP563XX microprocessor, notably:
Waldorf MW2/XT, Waldorf microQ, Waldorf Q, Clavia Micro Modular, Clavia Nord Lead, Korg MS2000, Access Virus A, Access Virus B, Access Virus C Access Virus TI Snow, Access Virus TI & TI2, and Many more !
What does this mean ? Well, these guys:
https://dsp56300.wordpress.com/
have already developed (3) FREE plugins that have that contain the emulator engine and a nice GUI for:
Access Virus A,B, & C called Osirus
Access Virus TI called Ostirus
and the Waldorf MicroQ Called Vavra
The en-genius part is that there is NO copyright infringement since they are only letting you download the emulator, the emulators actually work with the hardware's firmware file (placed in the same directory), the firmware files (usually a .bin) used to update a synth can be found on the web.
This combination of the free plugin and the respective firmware file will give you an authentic reproduction of some very expensive hardware.
While some manufacturers have software plugin versions... this approach can save poor musicians a lot of money.
Ethically, the use of a free found ROM file on the web (or extracting one from a software install) is your decision.
This DSP56300 Emulation Blog site is hell-bent on re-creating a ton of classic synths that use this series of Motorola chip and this would preserve these synths forever in a software form as many have never previously been available in a plugin.

Yeah, for sure, it is CPU intensive, and NO emulation for OS 9 :(
I can say after loading the Virus A /B and also the Waldorf Q in Logic 10.4.8; it sounds absolutely fantastic and one of the closest things to the hardware I've ever heard, the sound quality is a 11 out of 10; I am guessing because this is the actual firmware running in an emulator, not an approximation or imitation... so the only ingredient missing is the physical output stage of the actual synth. At any rate, can't wait to get the Access TI version working, it is currently crashing Logic.
At least many here still have ancient Virus Plugin for Pro Tools

This isn't really accurate anymore, they've made substantial improvements to the engine. I could barely run the betas but I've no trouble now on the same hardware.
They are close to releasing their Microwave XT plugin, Xenia. And they've shown proof of life with a Nord Lead emulator too. Pretty much anything that ran on those moto DSPs is on the table. Though I imagine it will probably be some time before we see emulations of hardware that ran several DSPs like the Novation Supernova and Nord Modular.
I've got all of the real things they emulate so, not much need for me, but I'm glad they exist.
Interesting note, the virus ti series runs at 48khz internally, but they found the code supported 96khz. Would be interesting if somebody did a deep dive on how different the oscillators sound compared to 48khz hardware.
