UTM and Macos9lives QEMU disks/files
« on: August 01, 2024, 07:49:34 AM »

Hello

I opened one of the zips (Initial) built (by user Diehard I think), took the .img disk and then set up a VM with UTM. Just magic to get a whole system rapidly and I'm sure the experience will be much better than it is with Sheepshaver. I will soon appreciate the other treasure boxes (like Loaded!). Thanks for those files, really.

However...

1) a minor issue. It's annoying to capture/release the mouse all the time from host to guest and guest to host. I imagine it's because there's no spice tools available from UTM !?

2) another "minor" issue (more problematic though). The share folder (from the Unix/MacOSX host) doesn't mount. For the same reason I guess (no Spice Tools).

3) BIG ISSUE. At that point I said to myself, ok I'll transfer files via a USB key. Darn, I checked USB in the config, alas when I plug a USB key it never mounts on the macos9 desktop.

This is rather frustrating. Is there a workaround or something I failed to do when I set up the VM.

Thanks

found a temp solution to my problem for file exchange

It's pretty lame (typical newbie stuff I imagine) but I made an empty .img file, imported it to the UTM VM, then used disk setup within MacOS9 to format and mount it. Then I made that img available in one of my Sheepshaver sheepvms and it works. I can fill that disk with files from the sheepshaver thing (via the shared unix folder) and then have them in UTM (and the other way round).

I'm sure there are better and clever ways but well, at least I can use, explore, enjoy MacOS9.2.2 without that feeling of it being isolated/cut off from the rest.

Failure ! My little tinkering -ie trying to import the .img disks into UTM and then trying to config things manually- didn't end well. First I tried to install Finderpop (1.9.2) and it behaved strangely...then I tried to config internet access and that was probably the last straw. The whole VM became unstable, at one point, typing produced white rectangles instead of letters ...

I guess a proper QEMU install, using the genuine files from Diehard, terminal etc... is the right way but that's beyond my reach and my free time.

I'll wait for some ready-to-go stuff (config + disks) for UTM or I'll buy an old iMac G3 and deal with the real mccoy, surely some ethernet-wifi bridge will be necessary as well.

In the meantime, I'll continue playing with my sheepshavervms, which is not the best of worlds: it's macos 9.0.4 (pretty unstable), you can't install many software (MSOffice 1998 is a no go for instance) etc...
