Jerry asked me for advice for a folk with HUNDREDS of PT5 sessions and wants them on a modern-age computer.

OK, just had a guy bring in a trash can mac and a Midas 40 Channel
He was using PT5 and OS 9 and had hundreds of projects
He is now going to use Logic Pro X, best way to import old projects ?

Best way is Keep using  Protools (the best advice EVER). On a Trashcan you can run PT 10 HD as the best option. You can load directly those PT5 sessions and convert them to PT10 even if SDII files are present.

If you want to convert the sessions to other thing than Protools there is a Digidesign software called "Digitranslator" that enables you to export OMF files (not sure if 1.0 or 2.0). OMF is a compressed file that has the multitrack audio files timestamped. I have made lots of conversions from Logic 5 PC to PT6 12-15 years ago . Within a week you can use Digitranslator without a license. The caveat is that it is only 16 bits, so all files get trunked to 16 bits and you loose dynamic.

How to PRESERVE the session? I would have 2 DAWs synced, a PT 5 TDM rig with as many ADAT bridge as needed. A ADAT bridge can give 2 ADAT ins and 2 Outs and SPDIF. With 2 you can have 32 tracks on the fly to be captured with a M-Audio Profire Lightbridge as the cheapest option on the modern rig.

If you have a Digi001 or 002 you can make the same but 8 tracks at once.

With any PT5 rig you also can (sessions)

-Print them to tracks

-Every track to an aux

-Create tracks to record those aux

-Import these new tracks on Logic

Or transfer the original tracks without the plugins...

On ProTools you select "ALL" in groups (down on the left) and on  and/or select all on menu.

Use zoom to check that everything is selected. (R-T) on TDM and PT6

Edit-Consolidate

Now all original files are as in a tape, all synced.

Go to session folder-audio files and sort all the files by date to have newest up.

You have the new sorted files with today or latest up in the list.

Drop those files to Logic X

But that's Windows application, right? Can it deal with HFS/HFS+ volumes and files containing Resource forks?

Can't the said person use AES31 as transfer format? Does it have to be Logic and nothing else?
