Hi from the Netherlands
« on: June 28, 2024, 03:06:42 AM »

Hi,

I allready submitted a post in the topic about M-Audio interfaces as that was the post which led me to this forum.

I'm based in the Netherlands and am a MacOS9 user since 2001. At first with a PowerPC8500 with a newertech G3 CPU card, then moved to a 9600 with the transplanted CPU card. I used that setup until about 2012. I also installed OSX on it but it ran buggy and I didn't enjoy that much.

In 2004 I bought an iBook Clamshell (first series) which also lives today. I recently exchanged the HDD with an Msata to IDE interface with an msata SSD. I also maxed out the RAM with 512MB expansion. The iBook now runs MacOS 9.2.1 and MacOS 10.3 (This wasn't usable with an HDD)

In 2012 I decided it was time to upgrade my system and I bought the last series of G4 MDD which was produced, because it is able to run MacOS9 and also added a G5 in the same week.

The G5 has died a few years ago due to cooling issues/leakage which killed the PSU.
I didn't bother to repair it as I moved over to windows for work purposes (I'm an IT system administrator)
The MDD however still lives on today., I kept it because of my Canon SCSI filmscanner which only runs with OS9.

Recently i wanted a Mac back and I ended up with a MacMini late 2012 as this is the last one with build-in firewire. I installed it with MacOS 10.9.5 (mavericks) To me it's just about the sweetspot in modern usages as well as compatibility with older software.

Why did I need firewire? I use an M-Audio firewire Audiophile sound card, which I used with my MDD for record analog material (Like vinyl) and I'm not a fan of the build-in audio from the computers.

For my MacMini I bought Cubase 7.5 with USB dongle, which runs perfectly.
I added a second M-Audio in my setup and connected midi between the two computers.

On My MDD I use the the native instruments FM7 synth.
This setup does work with MacOSX, but I struggle to get midi working in MacOS9.

I also have an Edirol UA-25 unit with which I have similar results.
With the M-Audio I now get a "midi received"  message when I sent it out via Cubase
where the Edirol unit isn't detected in OMS.  I think I will put a question for that in the corresponding topic.

Here is my current collection:
Mac MDD 1,25GHZ single MacOS 10.5.8 + MacOS9.2.2
Mac AGP 450Mhz (MacOS 10.4.11 , MacOS 10.2.8, MacOS 9.2.1)
iBook Clamshell (MacOS 10.3.8 , MacOS9.2.1)
PowerMacG5 (defective)
Powerbook 5300 (broken due to brittle plastics about 3 months ago)

Canoscan 2700F film scanner (SCSI MacOS9 only)
Umax astra 1200s
2x M-Audio firewire Audiophile audio interface
1x Edirol UA-25 USB audio interface

Well that's it for the moment
greets
Marcel

Goededag Marcel,

welcome and good to have you here! You opened up your Clamshell and exchanged the HDD by yourself? You must be a brave man ! 8) ;D

You're browsing this forum from your OS9 machine? You know that you can, do you? :-)

Hi,

Yes I did open up my Clamshell and it was hell. but the iFixit instructions were pretty clear, and it wasn't my first time to dig into that machine. ( I remember doing that more then a decade ago)

Unfortunately  I damaged the modem connector; the connector broke loose from the small circuit board. But I managed to solder it back and then secured it with some hotglue.

I used Classilla for a while on my MDD and also tenfourfox, but at this point browsing is no longer relevant on those machines to me. I recently found out that iCloud isn't usable anymore in Firefox 78.15.0esr (64-bit)  but Chromium came to the rescue.

I'm also a bit of rebel in terms of e-waste. I use an iPad 2 as a second screen on my Mac Mini using Duet display.

And fairly into retro computing. I own a collection of Amiga's since early nineties.
(A1000, A500 + A590, A600 + turbocard, A1200 + Blizzard 1230 mkIV turbocard + A4000)

My goal is to use the Amiga also in my future music experiments.

For now I have a lot of dreams and little time to do it.

greets
Marcel

Welcome, Marcel!

Your country has some of the bravest and most upstanding farmers I have ever witnessed. God bless them! Please be there for them, too!

I also hope you enjoy your time here and that you get even more out of your OS 9 machines. :)
