My many questions
« on: June 12, 2024, 06:09:58 AM »

Apparently I go here once before, but I am new....my usage of OS9 is different than what it appears it is for many. I use it to run ONE application only. On a mirrored door G4 (I have three working G4s).
Professional composer, by Mark of The Unicorn. Last updated in 1997. A music notation program that has MIDI capabilities.
Other than that, I use X on a different computer, a Studio Mac. The two computers share two screens and keyboard and mouse. I use an ATEN  KVM switch ( a very good device). One of the tow monitors is connected to that, the other I have to switch on the monitor itself.
I have all many of the music notation software programs on the new mac: Final, Sibelius, and laughable Doirco. I hate all of them.
Mosaic was brilliant software....one of the best of any kind I've ever done. Doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of those newer programs, but is way better at actually composing music in it, and the formatting it for musicians to read the parts and play it. I certainly use MIDI to hear what I'm working on, but music is all written for live performers, and it gets performed and recorded.
Back in the 90's, when using system 9 when it was as far as it went, I had a lot of issues with crashing, corrupted files and so on. But I've found that when you use the computer to run on program only, really, it's WAY more stable.
That's me.
I have multiple questions to ask anyone here who may know.
I would like to run a few other things: mainly a browser and/or an email program.
I used to create a lot of PDF files of written music, and then would email them to myself.
Years ago, I could no longer get a browser to work or an email program (I had internet explorer and outlook express.
Neither  has worked for years. If there is a way to make them work, or other programs I could use instead, i don't know about it.
I can transfer files using file sharing, but it's a slow, tedious process....can't send a folder full of pdfs, can only deal with one at time. In my  studio mac, I access my G4 on my home network, and can see a folder where i put files, but I can only open one at a time, and then have to save as a PDF. Doesn't seem to be a way to download a folder, and have many files to move. I can also use a thumb drive to transfer, but email was so superior. I also used to be able to send PDFs to anyone else from that computer. I can also burn CDs, but that's also slow and tedious.
The other question is: where can I get ALL of the discs necessary to install and run 9.2.2

The Macintosh Repository and the Macintosh Garden both have pretty much everything you need.

The "Downloads" section of the forum here has a pointer to all the 9.2.2 images created by the community:  http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?action=downloads;cat=9

For browsers, Classilla is the way to go. Mac OS 9 Lives has a page all about accessing the internet from OS 9: http://macos9lives.com/mac-os9-and-the-internet

The email situation is very difficult in my experience -- it heavily depends on your email provider and what services they offer.

Some good news, its no longer necessary to install an earlier version of 9 and then upgrade repeatedly to get to 9.2.2, as it was "back in the day"
The link provided above to the download section can help, there is also an ISO available at the Mac Repository:

I went to the repository site, signed up, but can't sign in. It says I was supposed to get a registraton email, but that never showed up. I may have broke it's trying to sing in 3 times rule...I tried to create an account again, and got the message that there was already an account with my email....which i can' seem to sign into.
I tried reset password and was told thee was no such email.
So I don't know how to get in.
So, at this point, I don't know what to do. Doesn't seem to be any way to contact them unless you're already in.

I downloaded classsilla (in X)....burnt the file not onto a CD, which I then put in my G4 and installed it.
But: i cannot get it to function. Won't connect to anything (including its own site). Im connected by ethernet.

That sounds like if your network is not working at all. What do your control panels like TCP/IP etc. tell. Do you get an correct IP etc. by DHCP?

he does not do that by will, but he is a smurf. :) and 98% of his content is from the macintoshgarden anyway.

My G4 is connected to my homework. That's how I transfer files from that computer to this one.
How should TC IP and other controls be set? Iike I say, the network works, at least for a file sharing

First step when troubleshooting IP is to see what you can ping.
Can you ping your router? If not you're unlikely to get any further.
If you don't know the IP address of your router, look for it in the configuration of your working machines.
Use the info there to help set up your G4.
It sounds like your ethernet is working, so the problem is likely to be IP config related.

I don't know what ping means.
I've got the router address, and a lot of other numbers in my (OS 14.5) settings....network to ethernet  contains:
Ipv4
IP address
Subnet mask
Router
dns servers
search domains
Ipv6 address
But I'm not sure what to with this, but I'll see if there's some back in 9.2.2 that I can put in the router address.

Go to your Mac OS 9 Control Panel "TCP/IP" and tell us what is up there. Usually you just have to select DHCP and everything should work automatically, …

>I don't know what ping means.

It's the IP equivalent of knocking on someone's door, and shouting "hello, anybody home?".

If you get a response then you've established communication, you can proceed with more detailed communication.
No response means there's a problem to solve.

It doesn't sound like you have a ping tool (why didn't Apple include one with OS9?), so follow Mat's advice and share your current config.

"WhatRoute" is part of many Mac OS install CDs. Look into your Mac OS extras folder at the CDs/images ;)

I forgot (temporarily) one of the basics: restart. So I did (actually shut down last night and turned on again today) and it connected to the classical site. And a few other places...but most I tried said things like "no common encryption algorithms" (which wasn't really surprising).
And alas: it still gives me no way to email to myself...which USED to be the best way for me to transfer PDFs from my G4 to may Mac Studio. File sharing works between the two, and I can use thumb drives or burn CDs, put email would be best.
I don't have any need to go places on the internet from this machine: it exists only to run one program (which as I have mentioned, makes the computer WAY more stable).
I am curious (aside from wishing there was a way have email) is what do other people here use system 9 for? Are they only using a 9 computer?
