What is the WAP2 link about?

Is it possible to view recent topics via this link?

WAP2 is just a very lite version of the forum. It's included in Simplemachines which is the forum software we use. There's not much we can do in terms of modification. What you see it what you got, more or less :)

Would it make more sense to host the forum via hotline or nntp given that http may eventually go away? It seems that there is a concerted effort to kill it at the isp level via lets encrypt.  I could easily see it being protocol blocked at routers "for your safety" at some point soon.

Perhaps even just having a separate subforum for technical info that can be mirrored on hotline or gopher.

We're on both http and https so that's not an issue at all. I don't think widespread http blocking is something that will happen at an ISP level. We're seeing it on web browsers and that's most likely where the blocking will be. We intend to mirror a lot of information on Gopher :)
