PowerBook G4 Power Adapter
« on: June 14, 2024, 09:39:15 AM »

I’ve got this old power adapter for my PBG4 Titanium. It’s an official 65W A1021.

Yesterday I went to use it, but it started to burn through where the wire meets the block, so it’s a bit of a hazard and out of use now.

Should I just save the round connector at the end / anything else, or discard it all?

I’ve got a third party one from another Mac, but of course that’s one fewer power adapter than Macs now.
Thoughts? Cheers

Thoughts?

Well… I rarely (if ever) throw any thing like that
“completely” away. So yes, I’d keep the round
connector in case another power adapter of similar
specs (with a damaged cord or plug) ever surfaces.

(Laughing) Because around here, when I do trash bits
like that… it isn’t very long before I realize that I
probably shouldn’t have - and then later need it.

And right now I’m staring at huge, non-working, “ten
ton” LaserWriter… that really needs to be e-wasted.
(Three different feed trays and all!) ::)

I just need to lug the behemoth up out of the
basement!

So, all entirely up to you. ;)

Did it burn with the white smoke? If so, not everything might be lost.

The weakest link in these adapters is the cable between the brick and the powerbook. The supply itself very seldom fails, but the cable is cheaply made, too thin, and becomes brittle and crumbles. The cable is so poorly made that it frays apart, and that's when it "burns".
It's pretty irritating that millions of these $145 power adapters were tossed because of the use of substandard cable. The upside is that replacing the cable will make them literally better than new.
Cook's Apple considers it a great triumph, of course, since it achieved planned obsolescence. They continue to use shitty cable on the MagSafe adapters and the current lineup.
