MacLynx - news, tips, discussions
« on: June 10, 2024, 12:31:43 AM »

I've been using MacLynx b5 for quite some time now for and thought I'd open up a thread and ask for your experience. If I recall correctly, it's currently the only browser developed for Mac OS.

For those who don't know it, MacLynx is a text-based (yes, no graphics) browser available for a myriad of systems. Cameron Kaiser (of Classilla fame) revived the project for Mac OS. Here's the website including the download:

http://www.floodgap.com/retrotech/mac/lynx/

I find it incredibly fast on just about everything 68k and PowerPC Mac with an internet connection. It comes with support for https proxies (via config file editing) and gives me better results with modern pages than I get from services like frogfind or retrosearch.

I know the assumption in the tech world is that everybody in the world enjoys stable 1000 mbit/s internet, but the reality in most parts of the world is different. So I definitely see a need for a small efficient browser that helps you quickly reading up on the news or grabbing a file.

I've been using it on both my Mac Mini G4 with OS 9.2 and my Mac IIci running System 7.1 and it performs well on both. No memory leaks. Very rare crashes. And it comes with full Gopher support, which I'm a huge fan of. To quote our admin knezzen: "Gopher is the future" ;-)

So try opening both http://floodgap.com and gopher://floodgap.com with MacLynx :-)

That said, beta 5 still has some problems - form elements such as search boxes and logins are still a problem. Cameron said he's working on it. Just as he's looking into compiling a special PPC version. And when talking to him, he also confirmed that an in-built bookmarks menu is on the top of his list as well.

So what has been your experience with MacLynx? Somebody else in OS 9 lands using it yet?

I've been aware of it, but been waiting for the PPC build to come back. In the meantime, for quick text webbrowsing, I have been extremely content with WannaBe. Else, I normally use Classilla 6.3.4b.

Since MacLynx is capable of using Crypto Ancienne for its HTTPS proxy, like Classilla, I have had it in my "watch list", but didn't feel motivated to fetch it yet. If the form elements were fixed, that definitely would make me consider it for regular use.

Gopher support certainly is a plus! Where's the Gopher Mac Garden? :( ::)
