Hello from France!
« on: June 03, 2024, 07:26:02 AM »

Hello everyone!

My name is Nico from Paris and I just got my hands on a 1998 iMac Bondi Blue. I saw a listing online for a non-working iMac with the original keyboard and mouse and decided to give it a try, as I've been fixing and modding electronics (mainly iPods) for years. The problem seemed fairly straightforward: a blinking folder with a question mark.
I had an iBook G3 a few years ago, but the hinge was broken and the keyboard was missing half the keys, so my experience with vintage Apple products has been pretty bad so far ::)

So I took the old iMac apart, cleaned up the motherboard, ordered a new PRAM battery to replace the old one (not working, but at least not leaking -- phew ;D), swapped the IDE HD for a new 120 GB one, installed Mac OS 9 from a home-burned bootable CD, and after literally hours of tearing my hair out trying to figure out why the Mac wouldn't boot with my fresh new installation of the OS, I figured out that I needed to set the HD as master by removing the jumper...

Well, here I am with my perfectly working iMac, enjoying Office 2001, some old games, etc.
I'm so glad to see that the community is still active and maintaining such beautiful machines.

I look forward to chatting with you all.

Bonjour et bienvenue!
Welcome to this rag-tag collection of various "misfits", still thinking differently here!

"No user serviceable parts inside." As many may see that warning as an invitation. ;)

Bienvenue nikakcafe!

Lovely machine, I used to have an iMac G3 back in the early 2000s and I loved mine - still very sorry I sold it (to get an iMac G4). How's the plastic on the machine? I heard it is one of the weak spots these days and opening up the iMac G3 is not for the faint of heart ...

That said, have fun around here! Feel free to join our discussions or start yours and asking questions, the learning curve on Mac OS 9 can be a bit steep at times :)

The plastic is in perfect shape! I'm surprised that none of the little clips holding the white transparent cover broke (which you need to remove to access the motherboard) even though I removed it literally dozen of times in a single afternoon  ;D
