Need help picking OS 9 DAW
« on: January 12, 2023, 10:09:15 AM »

Hi everyone!

I'm new around here, but I've always loved OS 9. For years now I've tinkered with my iMac G3 (DV slot loading) and had fun doing so, but this last month my friend gave me his old Power Mac G4 MDD. I had found info here about that before and was really inspired by the idea of getting it running optimally and using it for things like music! I got 9.2.2 installed thanks to this forum, and now I want to find the right DAW to run that will be somewhat accessible to learn!

I usually in the past have worked with Ableton Live, but it seems the old OS 9 copies have a barrier to entry with finding serial numbers and the lot. If i could work around that, it'd be my first choice.

In the absence of that, what is the best and most functional DAW i could get started with on this forum!? I'd really be grateful for any help and advice, I'd love to be a more active member in this community !

Thanks!

Well, today's your day. We have Ab Live and the serial too. Enjoy!

This is amazing!

I can download and get it to run with the restrictions.

The main issue being it looks like that's the serial number for the operator plugin and not the main application, and once you enter a main serial number in it requires you to it gives you a challenge code and all this stuff that seems to not have conventional support anymore... IDK if anyone around has a solution for this or tried this. Otherwise I'm open to try logic or other stuff.

Very grateful for the help and advice, this stuff has me really excited!

logic

To run v5 or v6 do you need to find an XS key? I just need help figuring out how to get past some of those things, I am willing to buy a used copy of something if need be. Logic seems pretty friendly and I remember using an OS X version a long time ago when I was younger.

for challenge/response it is easier to keep the support up than for older dongles.

it is a deliberate choice to cancel it.

but of course many companies are gone or were bought out after 20 years, and OS9 is <0.1% of the customers now.

There is a post from Chrisnova explaining the method to install. It was needed a Windows keygen IIRC

alright I am going to see if I can make it run when I get home from work. i just saw the old thread I need to find an old Windows system to run as well for the key. It feels like I'm just on the brink!

after some investigation last night i was able to get this working!!!!!!

use the ableton live keygen we had before with this serial:
Code: [Select]
3404-B10E-E829-A12C-698C-CCAE

be sure to paste this code into the keygen on the pc first
then copy the *SAME CODE* also into the working ableton live 4 on mac os 9
under options > preferences > products
enter the code here,
ableton will give a challenge code
take this code and enter this back into the keygen on the pc
then it will give u the lame ass seriously long 9 x 7 digits response code
upon typing this long code back into the mac os 9
u will have unlocked operator!!!!!!!

found this on OSD

Hey everyone!!! I just wanted to update with my gratitude, after some time I was able to get Live 4 running on my MDD, I couldn't be happier, I busted out a quick little track to test some things and I'm so excited! Thanks for everyone here making that possible and all. Now gotta look into further enhancing my MDD and also plugins / VSTs/ maybe an interface that will pair well with Live.

Having spent alot of time with Cubase VST and Logic, I am favoring Logic these days for a multitude of reasons.

Sidechain support in Logic 5-6, this is really hard to pull off in VST/32 in the box.

In Logic 6, the channel EQ was introduced which provides a spectrum graph of what's going per channel channel. I find this to be helpful seeing where exactly my sound is sitting per channel to help build the mix accordingly.

Logic 5/6 projects translate pretty well in Pro X and newer versions, Cubase VST requires SX3/SL/SE3 to migrate to the new CPR format.

I used Ableton Live 4 on OS9, the midi timinig was so bad that I stopped using Live all together on OS9 (I run mostly outboard equipment).

Here's a link to some white academic XSKeys that support Logic 5/6/7 with all extra plugins

I'm really late to this party!!!   8)

The whole reason I ended up on the site was to get Studio Vision running. I ended up building an MDD G4, and it's got a decent PT rig in it. Studio Vision is an amazing program, which for basically political reasons didn't make it to OS X. And that's really sad. But there are several versions of it available now with out the PACE, and it's fantastic. Super nice on the MDD too.
