New SSD adapter / Mac mini?
« on: April 24, 2021, 04:11:18 PM »

Two concerns:

1. Closeness to Optical Drive.
Although SSD does sag down away from OD if not otherwise supported,
there is a certain amount of heat generated by the OD. (How much?)
Will this be a problem over time?

2. No jumper present.
Two holes through PCB are there should a jumper need be soldered in place.
No jumper = Master?

Testing tonight or tomorrow. If this works, no more need to purchase mSATA’s
or mounting sleds. And if you want to swap SSDs between other machines
(MDDs, Quicksilvers, etc.) these should make that easier. AND now
possibly less expensive to convert all G4 mini’s to SSDs.

Have two possible sources for these in the U.S. so far. So if it works
they should be readily available and easily acquired.

1) No problem, I use "velcro strips" as a solution, as double-sided foam tape is a nightmare to remove the drive,
many machines I service get a genuine tray/bracket and this one is the best bang for the buck:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XG7126L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
However, some get the velcro treatment if there is no where to mount either a 3.5" or 2.5" drive

2) Heat will be fine, normal 2.5" SSDs don't gen nearly as much heat as mSata, and the optical heat is negligible (especially if insulated by velcro)

4) maybe you can cut an inch off the front with a dremel tool or remove it all together, since it's 1/3 the case size

Yeah, this one doesn’t infringe upon the Mac mini’s modem territory (below) and velcro might just be the “spacer” I’d like between the OD & the SSD for a little airflow between the two. It does seems stable enough without any mounting in the mini.

I swap drives so much between machines that I didn’t really want to cut away or expose the interior of the SSD. But, might cut some away for permanent Mac mini installations... and for that cool breeze ventilation.

Okay, headed downstairs to test adapter(s). Thanks again DH.
