OS 9 not detecting CD - PowerBook G4 Ti
« on: October 27, 2018, 09:51:08 PM »

I hope I’m posting in the right section...

When I insert a CD into my PowerBook Ti’s drive, nothing happens. OS 9 doesn’t detect or mount the CD at all. I’ve tried holding down C at boot, but no luck there.

I can hear the CD spinning in the drive. In order to get it out, I have to hold Eject at boot.
Any ideas?

I can hear the CD spinning in the drive. In order to get it out, I have to hold Eject at boot.
When this happens, it pretty much always means the drive is broken. The disc has been detected and spun up, but no data is being read.
In a working drive, after a minute you get a message on the order of "This disc is unreadable. Would you like to initialize it?"
If that does not happen, the read process is hung for some reason. Sadly, that reason is usually not repairable and the drive must be replaced.

I’m using the CDs I got with my PowerBook. They’re in excellent condition even after all these years.

I tried to use various types of CDs and DVDs.

Do you think a USB drive would work?

Took me 15 seconds flat. You're welcome.

Thank you, Gary.

The Ti is a beautiful machine, gorgeous screen quality after all these years, and surprisingly the paint is not chipping off from mine.
