Trying to use compactflash IDE adapter in B&W G3
« on: April 21, 2017, 10:32:22 AM »

Hello,
I know it's been a long while. Once again I need your help.
One of my HDs died recently and I'm trying to replace it with some sort of flashdrive.
I bought this:

along with 2 Kingston CF cards Ultimate 266X, one 32GB and another 64GB.
The problem is that if I set the adapter to slave mode, it won't show up on the disk utility. If I set it to master, I'm unable to boot from the other HD. Would I have to temporarily disconnect the DVD drive to use them both as master?

Did you tried with only one card at a time?

You have 2 IDE channels. Use the one channel from the DVD to clone whatever disk you have in the IDE66 channel.

One of my IDEtoSATA converters behaves the same. I am using the DVD channel for the SATA converter as the only device in that channel.

The adapter has a master/slave jumper. I'm aware the master/slave option works best on these Macs setting the slave device to "cable select". Unfortunately there's no such option on the adapter. I guess the DVD has cable select option, so I'll try using the adapter on its IDE port instead.

Ok, got it running, recognizes the CF card sizes, but Drive Setup fails to initialize/format both the 32GB and 64GB cards. Should I try a different adapter?

Or both on cable select or aOne in Master and the other in slave.

You can boot from slave any drives IIRC.

I think I'll need to try another adapter. The CF cards are failing to initialize when the adapter is master in another channel or slave in the HD channel.

PM G3 B&W rev.1 only acceps one device on IDE channel BTW. In OSX the system patches it for a 2nd device on the same channel. But on 9 is unsupported and lead to corruption data (can be your trouble)

Or both on cable select or aOne in Master and the other in slave.

You can boot from slave any drives IIRC.

Combinations:

1 Master and 1 slave

or

Both on Cable select (but the adapter do not allow it)

If you have 1 in Master and the other in cable select you have all the chances for one or both of them not being recognized

I don't have OS X and my G3 is Rev. B. They are being recognized but won't initialize, in separated or shared channels.

How much cost another adapter? Dig out for tested ones.

They're really cheap compared to the CF cards. I guess that's the best to try for now.
