G4 867 DP MDD won't boot, tried everything!
« on: August 27, 2016, 10:49:12 AM »
Hi all, I bought this machine about 4 months back & with the great help of this forum I got it running sweet.  I do a weekly radio show and had the machine dual booting nicely into 10.5.8 and 9.2.2.

After 3 weeks pretty much permanently on, I started my show and was streaming live using Nicecast and after about 15 minutes, the dreaded @your mac must restart@ black warning came up.

So I restarted, but the machine would not boot, during startup I am getting a load of errors.

I have used the Apple Diagnostics disk from this site, which reports no errors (extended test).  I have original Apple retail install disks of Tiger & Panther, plus various Techtool pro disks but it won't boot from any of them.

I've been plugging away at it for about 4 hours and beginning to give up... I've been thinking of looking for a new (new to me!) one but it seems a shame to give up on this one!

Any advice or help greatly appreciated!!

Cheers, Steve.

OK, about to try something else!!

I just booted it into target mode and have it attached to a 15 inch Powerbook G4 with 10.5.8 on it.  I'll zero the disk then drag the OS 9 folders across to it.

Should I be OK to use standard folders or would I need the OS 9 General folders from the disk on this site?

OS X, it had 10.5.8 on it actually, seemed to be running OK...

I'll wait for the disk to zero out & then drag the folders over.

I have since bought another machine so that the MDD is dedicated for OS 9.2.2

We'll see after the erase!

Steve_W.... I have two of those machines (now overclocked to 1.0ghz/167mhz), and neither of them ever liked 10.5.8, menu bar pink and often kernal panic (I assume this is what you describe as black screen), frozen black with white text. I can tell you there is another black screen but under OS9, and that is boot with no video whatsoever when the PCI slots are full. You need to to boot several times to get video. It's as though there is a search of the slots loaded, because my recollection is that the more slots full, the more reboots needed to get video. Now this was only with the stock Nvidea video card. ATI cards do not cause this. I presume there is a low voltage issue on the video AGP and USB ports, due to other issues I've experienced.

Do you have the install discs for that machine? Or any other MDD? A general universal 9.2.2 install will not give you the necessary MacOS Rom file and Audio extension. The system will run, but you probably won't have sound.

Go here:

http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/board,169.0.html

Do a 9.2.2 install.  The files are hidden, so you would need Tome Viewer to access them individually.

It's great machine. Both of mine are doing great....fast...

Thanks for that info, yes it's exactly as you describe when it boots:

Best to download 9.2.2 from 2002 at that link I posted.  MDD has to have it's own specific system. I had a helluva time when I got my first MDD. Store-bought installer dvd is not the way to go. If you must run OSX, use 10.4.11 and  9.2.2 on two separate drives or partitions. You should be fine unless there is some bad ram in there.

invalid pmap? does that mean partition map?

steve...
u got 3 things to check out
try this:

1) download + burn the mdd restore discs to blank CDs on another working computer (downloadable on macintoshgarden + here http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,3266.0.html)

2) try taking out all the ram but leave 1 single stick in.. and try booting up tilll it works.. each time on failure swapping the ram out for a different single stick, untill it boots right

3) if that doesnt work, replace the harddrive with another drive

unless anyone else had any better ideas
it could be just one of these points i just raised or a combination of the two

Hi buddy many thanks for those suggestions but sadly I had already tried all those.  I'm at the point of retiring the thing now as sad as that is...

I'll be on the lookout for an OS 9.2.2 emulator that runs on an RPI so I can rip the guts out of it but still run OS 9!
