Most of those IDE To SATA adapters works on Mac Os 9, but some don't. I can't tell you which one are the good ones  :-\

I think most green ones with pins (for master/slave/cable select) works. That was the lesson I got from previous MacTron's post about IDE to SATA adapters vs PCI SATA cards.

About the drives...There was some talk on MacRumors about some SATA III SSD drives not compatible with SATA I.

DieHard said on several occasions that the OWC IDE-SSD worth buying if you can afford it.

I think syntho or Knez had a Disk On Module IDE drive for boot drive with better than average results.

we've had reports that the samsung 850 was incompatible.. not sure if that was because it was a SataIII spec drive, or if it was because of the adapter that was used.. or both..  but i personally would try to get a SataII spec drive to be safe. i personally have teste adapters like the one that mactron has attached a picture of... and i can confirm it worked with a SataII spec drive.
