ram speeds ... faster? better? harder? stronger?
« on: September 10, 2015, 11:10:23 AM »

just one more note on why u should almost always stick to the manufacturer reccommendation on ram
i just was running some PC2-6400 DDR2 ram in my laptop and it was overheating like crazy like i was sweating from using the laptop it was getting so hott!!!

the laptop im using is rated at 533Mhz RAM... but "works" if u put in 667Mhz or even 800Mhz ram! (like i had in there) at first iw as thinking ok it will just clock down.. because 800mhz ram should be able to clock down to 667 and even 533...

anyway now that ive swapped one of the peices out, (the one that was crazy hot! 800mhz) now ive got 2 peices in there now.. both are 667mhz ddr2 . even tho the laptop is rated for 533mhz the chipset of hte motherboard supports 667mhz ram speed even tho the laptop shipped with 533mhz..

im not sure what happened to the original ram that was in the laptop when it was bought i probably "upgraded it" thinking it was "Better" not knowing that all i was doijng was making the laptop run hotter increasing the potential for failure!!

just putting in 667mhz ram instead of 800mhz has made the laptop return to normal temperatures!

now this laptop isnt a mac, but logically the same logic would go towards an MDD...
we had another thread talking about bugginess + freezes with the mdd..
using 4 x 256mb modules in the mdd = stability!!!!!

anyway u can do what u want but my vote is on sticking to the manufacturer standard or reccommendation in most cases

i just got a 2010 macbook pro
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2.4-aluminum-13-mid-2010-unibody-specs.html

it can be upgraded to 16gb of ram according to owc
but.. i dont think i need morethen 8gb.. anyone really see any X systems utilizing more then 8gb of ram? whether it be for recording.. or sound generation (VST/AU etc)? is it worth it to go for 16gb istead of 8? its a difference of 75 bucks for me atm... :D

Yes of coarse we've all been 'hypnotized' somewhat into the 'faster/newer ALWAYS = BETTER'!! type of mentallity but obviously NOT the case with your laptop!

Save the faster RAM for the winter time!!  ;D

does this make any sense tho?
faster the ram, hotter the temperature??
like i said the ram it was supposed to be using was 533Mhz (PC2 4200) according to the specs from Toshiba... but the memory controller itself built into the laptops chipset was the 945GM express chipset which supports 533 (PC2 4200) aswell as 667 (PC2-5300)  so my laptop was over heating like crazy because i had 800Mhz Ram (PC2-6400) ram inside it..... iit must have been because the ram wasnt properly clocking down to either 533 or 667???? is this the case? it was just a screw up because of incompatible or innappropriate speed ram?
or ...
can u always save temps by using a slower speed ram then what the laptop is specced for .??

im just trying to figure out how to get this laptop back to its normal operating temps... its way too hot all of a sudden - it didnt used to go on fire when i look at a youtube video!! now it gets close to 100 degrees

Is it possible that the fast RAM draws a bit more current??

At the RAM speeds you are mentioning, these is no temperature difference; so you have another issue all together; either a bad piece or RAM, or a CPU or GPU clogged/failed cooler that got the whole unit hot (including the RAM)

the ram was getting really hot
i know i actually had the cover off and touched teh chip as it was on.. and it was hotttttt..

plus the laptop started studdering recently and it never used to do that ive been using it with XP for the last few weeks  (for running some XP versions of VSTs)  and it was working fine the first few weeks.. now itll studder .. like the whole laptop goes stupid for .5 seconds and then .. the other night it actually shut down on its own i think because it got too hot.. first time ive ever seen it do this

the cpu inside it was originally a T2050 cpu (32 bit)
and i upgraded it to a T7200 cpu (64bit)

Yes that is a thermal shutdown, very BAD for the MB and chip

Like I said you have a thermal issue... nothing to do with the RAM (unless the chip is Bad).  Did you clean the cooler and the CPU chip and apply new arctic silver when you upgraded it ?

i didnt do the actual upgrade i paid some laptop specialist guy to do it
and he cleaned the cooler at that time yes

that would suck if all this is because he didnt use arctic silver
but like i said the laptop worked for the last few years with little issues

If it's been a few years, then it may be clogged with lint and debris that needs to be cleaned; don't ever try to "blow air" to clean a laptop cooler, that simply jams the wad of lint into the fan and kills the unit. It has to be dis-assembled and cleaned correctly. also, the fans go bad... so check that, and even the coolers can go bad !  I lot of people don't realize that the metal tubing coolers and also "die" and not transfer heat.  The test is to clean and re-arctic the cooler, then test the unit partially dis-assembled, if the fan goes on and you touch the cooler and it is not hot, then the cooler itself has failed and needs replacing since it is no longer transferring the heat.

its a toshiba satellite a100
but i upgraded the cpu to a T7200 core 2 duo 2.0ghz
it was a T2050 core duo before (32bit)

i like using it for XP because its got decent cpu, firewire, + 4gb ram
