Logic CD needs Floppy Install Disk
« on: August 03, 2015, 10:26:34 AM »
Hi, I managed pick up a very nice Power Macintosh 9600 a few months ago and the seller kindly included a bundle of old discs and assorted musical related oddments to go along with the computer.

One of the more interesting items was a CD and dongle for Logic Platinum. Unfortunately reading the installer manual I discovered that officially I would need a floppy disk to launch the installation from the CD. I did a little digging and it seems that Emagic actually had a disk image of this floppy that you could download freely from their ftp site (for Blue and White G3 users who did not have access to a floppy drive).

I have searched high and low trying to find some buried or long forgotten link to this disk image but so far it has eluded me. I have found all sorts of interesting hacks, cracks and other downloads but not the official emagic install floppy.

So I thought I should ask here if perhaps someone has this squirrelled away somewhere and wouldn't mind making it available.

Thanks for any leads or pointers that might help me track this elusive item down.

Simon W.

Did you check the wayback machine? You might be lucky.

The wayback machine archive of the Emagic website does have links to the floppy disk images for the various CD volumes but unfortunately they all point to an ftp site which isn't part of the archive.

I have even picked up a supposed 'complete' upgrade version of Logic Audio box from eBay only to find that the floppy disk was not in its cardboard wrapper.

Cheers, Simon W.

Try to get a complete filename thats how i do start sometimes. Then i paste that as a google search and sometimes the file pops up and somebody has it on his website.

simon - which version of logic platinum are u trying to install..
we have cracks for every version from 1-4.8x that work fine without the floppy disk
if its a version of 5 u shouldnt need a floppy disk at all
there are drivers that allow the usb dongle to authorize the installation of v4
this is what u will need to do if its v4.x platinum that u are trying to install + authorize with a usb dongle
the drivers obviously are not neccessary if u have an ADB dongle which is what was the norm at the time of release of v4.0

the drivers are on the emagic logic cd itself in a folder called "Emagic USB Dongle Driver".

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the information. It is version 4.5 and if memory serves me right it is the Volume 6 CD I have - the dongle is the original adb square box. I'll keep looking for the floppy (I'm sure it will turn up eventually). I'm currently looking at this more as an archival project than anything so trying to that was why I've been trying to keep things original and 'authentic' rather than simply going the crack route.

Cheers, Simon W.

i think this is what u are looking for?

The packages for Logic Audio 4.0 Gold and Platinum (new installation or update) contain — in addition to other items — a CD and a floppy disk. It is not possible to install the program without this floppy disk. Due to this, users of Apple computers without a floppy disk drive (iMac and the new G3-series "Blue Mac" can download this floppy disk as an "image" file here.

the links as u noted point to an external ftp site that is long since gone..

http://web.archive.org/web/20000304054541/http://emagic.de/english/support/download/imagemac.html

unfortunate that they didnt just have the file sitting on a webserver as it would have gotten backed up if it was posted that way

at this location + time, it looks as tho the files were originally hosted on the emagic-mirror website domain as an http:// link
http://web.archive.org/web/19990827100303/http://www.emagic.de/english/support/download/imagemac.html

but the files arent available to download there either

Logic Platinum 4.0 and higher require the USB version of the dongle. When a registered user upgraded to 4.0 you had to send back your ADB dongle. Try using the dongle emulator in the members section of this site or use version 3.xx or lower. Version 3 and higher of Logic Platinum require no floppy disks. Emagic moved to CD by then

All files you need are archived here in the members section. Actually Chris has my disc images that still need to be posted.

Thank you Chris! You are a legend! I have no idea how you managed to dig these up - I literally spent a day trawling around the various Emagic websites on the wayback machine and came up empty.

Those are indeed the floppy images you need to install Logic Platinum 4.0 from the older Logic CD's (mine is labelled Software Master CD Volume 6).

You have to use Disk Copy to mount the disk image first and then run the installer on the Logic CD. The CD installs the software and then runs an updater on the floppy to activate the application.

I test installed to one of my beige G3's, attached my adb dongle and now have a fully functional Logic Platinum.

Thank you to everyone who chipped in with advice, it is much appreciated. Please upload these disks to the Logic Software section here because they will be important to archive for the future.

Cheers, Simon W.

glad to help ;)
we owe it all to the web.archive.org site
and i guess also my ability to filter + try every possible link, under ever possible back up instance/date
as chokobo would say.. my "kung-google-fu" is strong! LOL!

he had uploaded some stuf to the ftp for me, which were more complete copies of the logic install cds then he originaly made ie: they contain the windows portions of the cds aswell instead of just the ripped / copied out mac file parts

they should still be on the ftp under my name or enablers ??
i would reccommend u dont rehash the existing "anthology" archives
but rather post them as an additional download? just for simplicity sake?

I am still very confused... our download board

Logic Anthology -> All Logic Audio versions for Mac OS 9 from v1.0 Thru to v6.4 (With all Installs and Updates)

Link: http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=811.0

I don't think these floppy images are needed at all for our version of Logic 4 ?

i think they were only needed for the early versions of logic from 4.0 to 4.5
like the logic site said... http://web.archive.org/web/20020601214542/http://www.emagic.de/english/support/download/imagemac.html

Please note: The different CD issues require different disks. Please check the volume number of your CD and download the corresponding disk image.

the floppy images are only needed for certain "volume.#" edition of the installer disks..

there is one pair of gold/platinum disks for the vol.5 & vol.6 install cd of logic 4
and then there is another pair of gold/platinum disks for the vol.7 cd installer
and possibly another pair of disks for gold/platinum for vol.8..

perhaps our installer was taken from a later volume # wherein they removed the need for the floppy installer?? or maybe it was cracked ?? remember v4 was the last working crack

im also confused diehard ;) but either way.. the disks have been found ;)

OK... sounds good, I will post the images when I have time for those who want to install 4.0 to 4.5 (off their original CDs) and either loose their floppy, or no longer have a floppy drive :)

simon,
check this thread to see my posts about problems using logic 4.0 with more than 1gb of ram..
i got a strange behaviour, where the audio would not play from the main timeline but only the sample editor.. this was with the cracked version i would be interested to know if u got the same result installing from the cd/floppy using the authentic dongle again this is only if u have more then 1gb of ram installed.
