Never ever touched Studio Vision. Would be fun to give it a go. Is there any VST support in the newer versions?
Studio Vision was an American product and popular on that continent. In Europe it was mostly Steinberg.

just read an old google groups post from 1992 where people tried to figure out whats popular and that i.e. twelve tone systems says they sell more than anyone else. i say it depends. europe definately was atari-centric up til the mid 90s when PC took over. macs slowly became popular with the LC series but were super pricey.

there were not many pro tools iii rigs around especially not running studio vision since it was 999 usd!

i bought the first pro tools iii hardware rig in my country a few months ago. 16 tracks and it ruined the guy and he was basically screwed over since digidesign abandoned nubus fast.

I need to give it a go. The MIDI editing functions look amazing to say the least.
Can't understand why Gibson killed it off when they bought Opcode.
There never was, and for my money still isn't, any MIDI sequencer comparable to Opcode's. I can't remember ever needing it to do anything that it couldn't.

The Gibson fiasco lies at the feet of one idiot: Henry Juszkiewicz. He formed an investment group and bought the brand from the failing Norlin Corp. in 1986 for cheap. By then, the electronic music revelution was well underway and Henry had wet dreams of turning Gibson into a music conglomerate much as CBS had when they acquired Fender, Rhodes, Leslie, Steinway and so on. He somehow forgot how badly that went for CBS when they put "the suits" in charge of making tools for artists. He also forgot that CBS had the funds to make all of those purchases whereas Gibson did not. Quite simply, he was banking on investment capital that just never came. When he realized what it was going to cost to stay competitive in the growing DAW market - especially against MOTU, he pretty much just said "eff it" and wrote the entire acquisition off. The Opcode guys tried their best, proposing ways to salvage the mess, including spinning the company off as a subsidiary but they got nowhere other than wasting time hoping for a better result.* I should note that Henry never did give up those dreams. In 2011-13, he bought the Stanton Group which included Cerwin-Vega and KRK to attack the growing DJ market, then partnered with Onkyo(!) to try to create a pro audio division and even bought TEAC (yes, TEAC). None of that went well leading to all of them being sold off within 10 years. Worse, Gibson guitar quality control also suffered. Despite "innovations" like the Gibson "Robot" guitar with its motorized tuners, (a story in itself) Gibson filed for bankruptcy in 2018.

* The official story is that Opcode SVP, Galaxy and all other source code was transferred to Gibson, subsequently lost and no other copies exist.
Chew on that thought and if you find it believable, I have some miraculous AI songwriting software to sell you.

to me the selling point is trent reznors records up til (parts of the fragile) when he switched from SVP to Logic and Pro Tools (or hired an logic operator because he refused to learn it initially)

he outright refused to make songs without SVP -> thats my selling point.

He wasn't the only one. I remember seeing a full page ad in some magazine for SVP with Sascha Konietzko from KMFDM on it. The fact that guy did an ad for anything, let alone SVP, was a huge endorsement for me in my youth lol.

There was also a Gibson guitar that plugged into an Ethernet cable. They called that "MaGIC".

The Gibson fiasco lies at the feet of one idiot: Henry Juszkiewicz.

I have a passionate hatred for that man that persists to this day. There used to be a website around somewhere, i think it might have been put up by Doug Wyatt, explaining the nightmare experience Juszkiewicz put them through. IIRC the guy had a mental breakdown thanks to him. Juszkiewicz regularly bragged about how he had a horde of lawyers and that he just loved to put them to use. Utter garbage human being.

The one upside of the bankruptcy was they were finally able to get rid of him. Lo and behold they were out of bankruptcy less than a year later.
