missing system software.......
« on: May 21, 2015, 03:48:50 PM »

Greetings all.Hi i'm JT. I hope to find help with a major problem with my Powerbook 1.0Ghz G4. I have a Powerbook G4 1.0Ghz running Mac OS 9.2.2. Everything is working fine with the system except for a major bug that I need help solving. My machine has a bug that prevents system sleep. When I try to put the machine to sleep I get the dialogue alert "Your computer can't sleep because some system software is missing.Reinstall the software that came with your computer." I have also noticed that my system Sound control panel is dead also.I have no working Sound control panel. When I use the sound buttons on the keyboard, the menu bar turns blue as long as I press the keys and nothing happens.I believe the sound/sleep bug is the same bug for both problems.I hope I can find out what I need to install to fix this problem. My machine is a stock G4 Powerbook 1.0 Ghz with Mac OS 9.2.2 installed from updates, not a CD.I'm sure someone out there has solved this issue.Thanks.

Hi JT, and wellcome.

The "Apple CPU Plugin" file inside the Multiprocessor folder (in extensions folder) is removed, damaged or incompatible with your Mac.

Hi Thank You to all who read my post about my sleep/sound problem>Unfortunately after I did a fresh install of a new copy of 9.2.2 I discovered my machine still won't sleep!!! Strangely my sound control panel now works correctly but the machine still won't go to sleep.Unless there is something I can do like a Firmware update or changing a corrupt file or control panel,I think my machine has an unfixable hardware problem deep in the ROM or somewhere else. It's strange,I have an old 400Mhz TI Powerbook that I use for utilities that sleeps fine with the same installed OS! Also my 1.0Ghz machine sleeps fine when running X.2 and beyond, but not when running 9.2.2! This is the strangest problem I've ever seen. It's hard for me to give up on a machine.I own about a dozen Macs and I have solved every problem they've ever had but I might just have to get a new logic board for this one. Thanks for reading. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know!

Hmm, ... you are talking about X at the machine as well. Do you have X an 9.2.2 installed at the same computer?
If possible I would suggest to kick X completely as it is making strange things to 9.2.2. I often had problems with 9.2.2 that was somehow used by X for Classic as well, and didnt work as well as a clean single 9.2.2 install in native boot.
So if you have both systems at the disc, I would say give it a try with a totally fresh new 9.2.2 installation including partitioning the HD from 9.2.2

You didn't specify; did you reinstalll your System 9.2.2 from updates or did you try our Titanium download? At first blush, it would seem that, since it did sleep before and now it won't with "new" software, that's telling you where to start looking.  The "missing software" message makes me suspect you might be yet another victim of the "lacking the machine-specific discs" syndrome. I know that doesnt explain why it was sleeping before; I just think that there's a reason that all of "them" (including Apple) make it a point to tell you to always have a backup before starting an upgrade...

Also, since you're a long-time MacHead, please forgive me for asking the obvious:
1) Any odd USB items in the mix? Mouse etc.?
2) Same issue with only OS9 Base extensions enabled?

^^ yep definately possible that malfunctioning sleep could result frm using the wrong powerbook restore discs.. i have read that there are many different versions and u need to find the one that corresponds to the code that is for your specific machine.. which is why i was kind of cringing when u emailed me personally.. as i dont own a powerbook g4 and i know that this would take some effort to find out this info, as a quick search revealed no links to official apple documents outlining which disc is needed.. again. u have to be very careful to find out which exact disc was for the exact version/model that u have
