i still am left wondering about the samplecell II
is it really worth every penny of the price i see them go for? 120$ which isnt much
compared to the original price..

can anyone share their experience with the samplecell card? how its used.. how it sounds.. which apps it can work with. does it show up in OMS as its own device?
im assuming u would trigger it via midi? do u use the IAC bus to talk to it? how does it work??

theres also the softsamplecell software version of the samplecell.. (SSC)
http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/soft-sample-cell-work-protools/

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb02/articles/softsamplecell.asp
i know ive brought this up before, but is this ilokked? i know it was discontinued.. this much i remember...

Installing Soft Sample Cell
Installation of Soft Sample Cell is ostensibly simple, and OMS had no problem recognising my setup and installing Soft Sample Cell as an OMS node. Sadly, however, I couldn't get a MIDI response from Soft Sample Cell until I'd switched off my Toast Firewire driver, renamed the Soft Sample Cell extension to get it to load first and sacrificed a couple of goats! This kind of O-M-Mess is not the sort of grief we expect from a 'professional' product. And talking of which, it's way past time the obsolete key floppy disk install system was dropped, as Macs haven't had floppy drives for some generations now. Not only that, but although it installed perfectly well on my external Teac floppy (with suitable Pace extension), it simply refuses to uninstall: the uninstall program loads, the floppy whirrs for around 10 seconds, then it quits. Looks like I'm stuck with Soft Sample Cell...

heres a guide:
http://akarchive.digidesign.com/support/docs/Soft_SampleCell_Guide.pdf

looks like version 3.0 requires mac os 9.04+

heres the link to the old thread i had started
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=513.0

i just think these topics are worth revisiting
i remember BT was on here asking for anyone with the samplecell original disk installer.. (he had lost his original disk) and noone answered him i dont think.
but perhaps he found his cd!? he never mentioned it again

Hey there!

My 2c. SampleCell was an incredibly valuable device when it was my only "in the box" sampler. Yes we had ESX24 but this worked way better for working with beats (i.e. Recycling break beats and dumping it into a sample map). It's so easy, the timing is excellent by midi standards and the sound quality was great. Now if you're going for character, this is not necessarily it. It stands firmly between an S900 and S1000 in terms of "character".

I got one again recently because so many of my sessions at that time used it and I wanted to have access to the midi not just audio of these sessions. It works great still and I think workflow wise I programed different beats (stylistically) using this so I will pull it out for some future works. It's great.

Best,
_BT

likening it to an s1000 + s900 works for me  8)
i dont think u can get either of those for 120-140$

few more notes re: soft sample cell app
so the download requires authorization of soft samplecell 30

mactron?? :D anyway around this ?? :D

like i said last time, i wonder if there a previous version that requires no auth, or requires auth from a floppy image.. im guessing that this 3.1 also requires floppy authorization? via usb floppy maybe?

hi i dont know if posting to this older topic will show anywhere? well I'll try.. ::)

Ive got a full functioning Soft Samplecell on a MacG4 9.2.1. Ive used it for years and its the BEST sampler for Mac OS9 ever!
Very simple to use just Drag&Drop ur samples onto SSC alias and it will spread ur samples evenly over the keys. It uses 88 keys per channel but only comes with 16 channels. But still 16x88 = 1,408 samples which is like overkill for an OS9 Mac. Its easier to use than Kontakt, it just doesnt come with all those extra FX n things. Its a straight up Sampler. But it does have the ability to "tweak" samples with basic filter cutoffs n things and u can use ur Audio editor inside Soft Samplecell as well.

I want to give out Softy Samplecell to everyone so they can use it too. But Im having trouble finding my original Install/key auth floppies. If i cant find them.. Is there another way to de-install "key auth" from harddisk without the original flopps? Maybe using a USB trick? hopefully theres a way. thnx in advance to anyone with a suggestion or solution.

Also, is the "key auth" an invisible file? I havent been able to find it as of yet.

hi, see my post above re. getting Samplecell Nubus to work with Turbosynth  :(

Samplecell did have interesting 'tracking generators' but otherwise i have not explored its abilities.

this thread maybe should be merged with the other samplecell thread where mactron attached the file recently?

Includes 'osmosis' for converting akai to samplecell - anyone heard of it?

looks like its by bitheadz and was discussed previously here:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=3366.0

cost 179$ in 1999
https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/bitheadz-osmosis/
https://www.amazon.com/BIT-HEADZ-Osmosis-for-Macintosh/dp/B00007BGOB
https://www.emusician.com/gear/bitheadz

thread on digis forum here:
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=11443

manual:
https://usermanual.wiki/Document/BitheadzOsmosis.3686562339.pdf

Quote
Osmosis is a Macintosh and PC utility for converting Akai S1000 and S3000
formatted disk to Unity DS-1 or Sample Cell formats. Osmosis reads the disk with
the CD-ROM you already have and displays the disk file hierarchy in a single
window. Also, the entire disk directory can be saved to a text file. No more tiny
screens and confusing user interfaces! Use all those Akai disks you have sitting
around with the modern computer-based sampling tools. It makes the perfect
companion for Unity DS-1 or Sample Cell.
Features include:
• Akai S1000 & S3000 CD-ROM conversion
• Save programs as Unity DS-1 or Sample Cell
• Save samples as Unity DS-1, AIFF, Sound Designer 21
 , or wave
• Batch conversion of multiple programs & samples at once
• Audition samples before conversion
• Drag & drop export
• Save disk directory to text file
• Works on any CD-ROM equipped Macintosh
• Works on any ATAPI or SCSI CD-ROM equipped PC
How does it work? Computers get confused by different format CD-ROMs other
than what they’re used to. PCs deal with PC formatted CD-ROMs, and Macs deal
with both Mac and PC formatted CD-ROMs. Stick an Akai disk into your computer
without Osmosis, and your computer won’t know what to do with it. It doesn’t
know how to ‘speak Akai’.
Well, we’ve scratched our heads a bit and figured out how to coerce (pummel?)
these computers to both recognize the disk, as well as read the programs and
samples on them. Along the way, we’ve added some cool features such as being able
to audition the samples within Osmosis before you’ve converted them, as well as
drag & drop programs and samples to your desktop. You’ll be using those old Akai
disks within minutes.

add another vote for "translator"
Chicken Sys may be infamous ass who fucks up routinely about sending/shipping products
yet that sample converter package works as intended for wide array of classic hardware sampler formats
have used it for making Ensoniq CD Roms for ASR10r
plus other formats
my old version can be glitchy crashy bitchy
yet eventually can make functional roms for hardware samplers
if you just need sample format conversion it's a breeze most of the time
really want the old Ensoniq ASR10 factory VHS tutorials he transfered for DVDs
used to watch them for days/months in background as "entertainment"

CDXtract is too, espcially when you feed it akai images with errors. for mss conversions your bst bet is to ue it in the clssic enviroment in OSX; nowhere else you restart it so fast when it crashes.. :)

Note: a brand new Universal Binary Translator Mac is in beta. Unfortunately it is only available for OSX. We tried to make it OS9 compatible, but too many features exclusively for OSX were available and we wanted to take full advantage of them. The Version 1.5 Build 64 OS9 Translator Mac will always be part of the Translator package but we are no longer supporting it as far as code additions are concerned.

Translation, sample audition, viewing of proprietary disks, extraction of samples, and other features are included.

Now you can have complete access to your Akai, Roland, Emu, Ensoniq, and Kurzweil CD's/hard disks, as well as complete modern sound libraries on Giga, SoundFont, and SampleCell formats in your Mac!

The Mac and PC versions share the same code base, with code being transferred to the Mac structure. The Mac program uses the exact same high quality translations that Translator Windows is known for.

Translator Mac adopts the look and feel of the old OS9 interface standards - not only does it function well, it looks standard and good too!
Is there an OS9 version archived somewhere?
Version 1.5 Build 64 maybe
Well aware he would put out a "hit" on me for even daring asking...
no big stress... have version 2.9 XP... works for me :)
