ram coolers = performance gains?
« on: April 19, 2015, 07:48:09 PM »

i recently changed my ram in my AMD windows 7 pc and experienced a very noticable increase in performance..  (going from 1333 to 1600 ddr3 ram)
obviously its faster ram but also, this 1600 ddr3 ram has ram coolers..

so im interested.. can ram coolers help the performance of my ram??

i found this auction of cheap 3$ clip on ram coolers that can be used on any DDR1,2,3 im sure it would fit onto a sdram chip too?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aluminium-Heatsink-Spreader-Cooler-Cooling-For-DDR-DDR2-DDR3-RAM-Memory-Black-/120899071579?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c26256e5b

what do u guys think? is it worth the effort?
u see alot of people worrying about cooling on forums..
ive never really made the connection between cooling + performance gains.. but maybe its true?!!

also theres ones like this for notebook ram size
http://www.sunbeamtech.com/PRODUCTS/cooler/Spreader.html

then of course theres heatsinks to place on video card ram chips
directly on the chips

an extreme cooler:

People say they run and look cooler.  ;D

Probably on overclocked buses is more important. It should be a more stable setup using them. Even on usual config.

I have 4 of those heatsinks for SDRAM/DDR and I didn't have the time to put them. G3 B&W and following models have a main fan inside the box that helped us living without RAM coolers.

Probably you can have less system hangs using RAM coolers.

I always wondered if they really work. I thought it was a geek unnecessary product.

This won't increase performance.

It will not increase the speed of the memory or the system bus. There really aren't many ways to overclock ram on these macs. Apple pretty much included all the cooling you really ever need with the ram.

Unlike the cpu ram doesn't throttle down if the system is running hot and ram runs noticeably cooler then a cpu or northbridge. This is why most ram today still comes without coolers and even the ones that do 90% of the time its just to look cooler.

At $3 while it wont give you any performance gain it might make you think yo mac looks cooler and it might give you a placebo effect so why not go for it? But in reality no gains. Heck some of these cheap Chinese coolers from ebay have such big sticky pads on them I bet all they do is insulate...
